Anyone out there who can answer 2 questions about the SMART Getrag gearbox as fitted to FourTwos, Roadster Coupes etc:

1) Is it a true sequential or is the semi-automatic mechanism mapping up/down to H pattern at the gearbox?
2) How much power can the box handle?

Thanks to anyone who knows...

I can't help with your question but SMART is actually smart

I've found a decent amount of info out from here (Page 494, Getrag 431 box), but long story short - it's not sequential, it's just an actuated manual.

Looking at that, I thought the Peugeot MA was a poor box design, that's horrendously poor for higher-than-standard torques!

Also worth carrying on reading - the next one looked at is the 7-speeder in the E60 M5, followed by DSG boxes in various VWs and Audis.

And your answer extracted from that is, "Due to the relatively small torques, other criteria were more highly weighted, such as package and costs."

BTW it appears to have been written by Jeremy Clarkson...

I'd say that was a reasonable word use - the design takes multiple torques into account, due to various stresses etc.
