"Admiral said that in its core UK car insurance market, there has been a “marked change” in 2012, with premium rates falling and competitors seeking to add market share."

Sounds like someone shoved the microphone in the wrong hole.

That is terible, a motor insurance charity making profits and looking after employees whilst providing an optional* service in a competetive marketplace.

  • optional as in nobody forces you to own a car.

We are however forced to get raped by insurance companies if we should choose of our own free will to own a car.

Nope. It's a free market with many providers; plenty of demand and plenty of supply. The broken bit is the hire car/whiplash/claims mentality and fraud that is loading premiums.

Admiral had a good year and made, what, 16% EBITDA? Not exactly gold mine of the year....

THis was my first reaction. Premiums have gone through the roof in the middle of the worst economic times in living memory and a with a fact like his is profiteering and lying.
Grrr
