Where are all the petrol Mondeos?

Been looking at the mk4 Mondeo with great interest and after 5 years on the used market you'd expect a reasonable amount of choice. Searching for a manual Mondeo with a petrol engine you get barely 300 cars nationwide to pick from. Open it up to diesels and there's 3,000 of the bloody things.

Is the 1.6 petrol the same 1.6 engine they use in the Focus? I can imagine that struggling in the Mondy if so.

Does nobody buy a big petrol car anymore? I know many will be company cars so obviously diesels but I was under the impression the Mondeo was quite a poor deal on company car tax.

Same with most new cars, was looking at 5 series earlier. Searched AT for 5s under 2 years old, 495 cars in total. 18 petrols.

Eighteen out of five hundred ffs.

See that's just stupid, especially because a 5 series is an expensive car. Who buys a car of that value and then decides they can't afford to put fuel in it?

Lots of them will be ex-fleet (company cars, rentals, etc.) where the buyer would have got a very good deal. And basically nobody bought petrol ones. The 1.6 appears to be the 120hp one out of the Focus and will be unable to pull the skin off a rice pudding, let alone a lardy saloon car up a hill.

Assuming you're not genuinely asking the question but rather attempting to show the cost is not inconsiderable I think you need to ask what is the relative cost of a lease of a 530d over a 530i and then consider the tax liability for the driver of "owning" the two. Those cost differentials are the reason so many fleet purchases (and both models mentioned in this thread are mostly company car orders) are for diesels.

Run another search I bet 90% or so are ex company cars with 100K+ on the clocks so diesel will have saved them some running cost.

A good percentage of largeish cars seem to be company cars almost as though the private buyers have been holding off changing for a few years,

Most Mondeos bought by retail customers are Diesel, mainly due to the fact that used Petrols aren't worth a bolt and people just look at the MPG instead of the fuel cost per litre. I just bought a '58 plate Mondeo Titanium 2.0 Petrol from a bloke for £2,200 - bargin!

If you're going for a petrol Mondeo then get the biggest engine available. Their mpg isn't great but they're dirt cheap.

Why would the average buyer want a petrol Mondeo? Rubbish on fuel and slow unless you go for the 2.5T. Diesels get better mpg, have loads of overtaking grunt and are cheaper to tax. Unless you're into cars why would anyone choose petrol? It's not like it's a car that appeals to petrolheads.

There was a 2.5 Turbo (Focus ST engine) Mondeo in Autocar that had done 250,000 miles in a quite a short time. Can't remember what they worked out the fuel bill to be, but it was pretty colossal.

Give it another 12/18 months and some of the newer petrol ecoboost Mondeos will be up for sale.

Mundano's and Vectra's are company car land, very few were bought privately, and those that were were bought generally by people who used their car for work, so most will be diesel.

Unfortunately the onset of diesel madness has killed the idea, a shame really - my ST24, whereas being a bit gutless compared to its rivals, was a brilliant drive
