Worrying news from our chums in the European Parliament. Looks like they are going to start meddling with classic car MOT tests by insisting classic vehicles are:
Maintained by use of replacement parts which reproduce the historic components of the vehicle
Have not sustained any change in the technical characteristics of its main components such as engine, brakes, steering or suspension
Has not been changed in its appearance

The reports on car club websites are, in my opinion (based on practising EU law) alarmist and inaccurate.
There is a draft proposal. iI is some way off legislation. It does NOT, contrary to reports to teh contrary, ban modifications or have a significant effect on classic cars. The UK is resisting major changes.

Some old cars will , if the proposal goes through (note: IF) be exempt from MOT tests.
Others, including modified ones, will just have to have MOT tests. There is not a proposal to ban all non original parts.
This statement from C and SC is completely wrong:-

FBHVC are being a bit silly there
basically this is the same rules as in Germany if you want to register your car as a 'historic' car (and get cheaper tax, exemption from emissions zones, cheaper insurance etc)
safety mods and period mods are allowed though
you can still run your older car as a 'normal' car though

The car club and enthusiast websites are, in my opinion, seriously misreporting this subject, and behaving in a manner which is bordering on the irresponsible. Few if any of then appear to have read or understood the proposal. They have not reported, or given much prominence to, the calmer and, in my opinion, more realistic view indicated by the DfT.
Indeed. On the other PH threads, one of the panicmongers says that Nick Griffin is a freedom fighter, and one says that this is part of the Global Jewish conspiracy. I am not making this up!

So my MGB Roadter that has had a bare metal rebuilt and a V8 and SD1 box fitted....guess i'll have to scrap it. Utter interfereing
s.The fact that some of us actually believe in an EU- warts and all- doesn't make us idiots any more than those who have well reasoned views against the EU. But some of the red top press does make an art form out of misrepresenting EU issues and inventing alarmist crap to feed their readership's prejudices. In a country where one can drive everything from a 1930 Bentley to an Ariel Atom perfectly legally I don't think we have been as hard done by as many would like to think...

I'm all for road safety but WTF classic cars frankly represent a tiny tiny number of cars which invariably are used in good weather and driving conditions. I'd assume strongly the number involved in accidents are also tinny and possibly the best or eager fewest accident probability as one the owner realises its value two is never in a hurry three love driving and are never in a hurry in fact the longer the drive takes in said car the better.
If this is what they consider as a serious issue to investigate and legislate against madness.
Why not legislate and push through that legally the Govt have to resurface roads every x years that would decrease accidents and improve general car conditions as wear and tear on the cars would beach less.
Or rather why not come up with a genuine plan of how to get the 20%+ unemployed in Europe back into genuine work.

s.There are many legitimate grounds for objecting to the EU's organisation and actions, but, regrettably, Euroscepticism is often tinged with xenophobia. Not all Eurosceptics are xenophobes, but some are, and we've seen a couple of them on these threads.
I am in theory pro EU, and would like to see a democratic Federal Europe, but nowadays would prefer the UK to be in EFTA, because of the undemocratic nature of the EU in its current form, and its policy errors in many fields, including the currency project.
The roadworthiness proposal is not inherently a daft idea, subject to the argument that the extant 2009 Directive is adequate for the purpose sought to be achieved. If there si to be a new system, then the proposal needs to be refined and re drafted. NB: it is aimed at all cars, and classic and modified cars are not the main targets.
