Suprising MPG! 15 year old 2.8 shed...
Discussion
Hi, just thought i'd post out of amazement...
Have recently adopted a different driving style - when not hooning.
Now my (actual, measured from refilling at the same pump) average mpg has gone from 26 to 36mpg! that's over 200 miles and includes 40 miles of (very) enthusiastic driving. Also includes the the occasional full throttle redline blat in normal driving.
Most of it is reminding myself that everytime I press the brakes, its effectively burning money (fuel)
This is shockingly good mpg for a 2.8 litre pretty swift petrol powered 120,000 mile car, 15 years old. And would be very easy to continue in this way.
Before anyone wonders why this should be on PH, all the time i'm still 'making progress'
Has anyone else managed incredible mpg (much better than expected) from their cars? and what do you do to achieve it?

Mine isn't as good at yours but i get 37ish mpg from my 11 y/old 2.0 petrol alfa. Thats mixed driving with some hooning inbuilt too.
I think you're right about "braking wasting energy" i think of that too. I am helped by my commute being sweeping quite A roads that i can cruise along at 60 if i want too.

38.5mpg from my Nissan Navara. It was a long journey on Welsh A-roads. As soon as I hit a motorway and kicked the speed up to 70mph it dropped to about 33mpg as I remember. Of course, accuracy can be questioned as it was just the trip computer.
It averages 32-34mpg day to day, which I think is remarkable.

I've been keeping an eye on my work van mpg, currently averaging 34mpg which is quite good considering it's a LWB vivaro loaded with tools, ladders etc, with a whopping 100bhp that gets driven pretty hard and mostly stop start driving and short journeys. One of these days I might actually take my time with it and see what I can get it up to.
Poole to Richmond 6am-8am
Richmond to Poole 10pm-12am
Just over 40 mpg verified. At one stage it was showing 45 mpg, and mine over reads by 1-2 mpg
E39 528i SE, between 60-70 mph and a couple of Italian tune ups. It's an easy drive with not much braking involved when there's a lack of traffic. Incredible for the car.

Alfa TSpark engines are surprisingly economical. Don't know how they managed it, but the modular (Fiat based) TSpark in Mrs. Norris's 147 gets about 20% better economy than my 1.8 MX5.I think you're right about "braking wasting energy" i think of that too. The older 8v 'Nord' based TSparks are even better.
I drove the wifes Mondeo 2litre petrol Duratec from Hants to Devon and according to the computer it achieved 45 mpg and that was obtained by minimal breaking and acceleration using a light throttle but let the engine spin so it was not a slow drive.
A car that shocked me was the BOA engined Granada Cosworth that I owned as would do 31 mpg on a motorway at 70+mph but only 18 mpg at 30 mph.
