I hate selling cars and bikes privately, the internet has made everybody wary of being ripped off. I've got a bike up for sale, today somebody came to look at it, listened to it run, etc and made me an offer which I accepted.

I printed two what car receipts, we filled them out, he signed them, he has left a 25% deposit and has agreed to pay the balance by bank transfer. All he had from me is an address, sort code and account number.

So why do I still feel like there is a scam hiding somewhere just because he didn't look like the kind of guy you'd expect to buy this kind of bike.

Has he paid with funny money?

Is he going to empty my account just from the sortcode and account number?

etc

Sad reflection of modern life.

You know, your opening sentence makes it sound like you miss being able to rip people off.

Last bike I sold privately they turned up in an old transit, four blokes did, one left the cash asking price for a test ride and 3 of them stayed behind, then they wheeled it into the back of the van leaving me with the cash and no bike.

Next minute (in the sale) the neighbour comes down in his car blocking them in, then sees me and asks why 4 blokes are wheeling my bike up into their van.

Not sure what this adds to the discussion, but people who have cash and want something tend to be ok. It's anyone else or anything else that causes trouble.

He's left his money with you and doesn't have a car, if that was me I would be the worried one, not the other way round.

The same information that is contained on a cheque, so no.

Exactly. Completely irrational isn't it...
