With the imminent unveiling of the mk7 Golf, I've been wondering what the highest generation number is that has been released by any manufacturer.

Ford always seem to change model names (Escort dropped for Focus, etc.), so I don't think they're in the running.

C-class? 3-series? 911?
How many generations have been released and who have had the most?

According to Wikipedia
SL - only approaching their 6th generation.

Transit - on their 7th generation.

Ford Falcon has gone through 25, although whether these changes are significant enough to be called "generations" is debatable.

I think most of those were only facelifts (even by Ford's admission).

Isn't the question basically "Which car company has kept the same naming convention for the longest" though?

For example the Vauxhall/Opel Kadett which ran for 6 generations between 1937-1991 became the Astra which has run for a further 4.

I'm sure the same could be said if you trace back the Focus/Escort/Anglia...

Just saying getmecoat
