Toyo R1R opinions?
Discussion
Worn through a set on the ol' 300-ish hp Saab 900 (old school version) - wet grip generally excellent - wiped the floor with the road tyre shod competition in the corners on a sodding wet Brunters at Ultimate Saab Day - aquaplaning resistance marginal to adequate, but what they really don't like is cold. Under 10 degrees C the grip seems to fall off a cliff, especially if wet/slippery with no chance to get a bit of temperature in them. They're not nearly as bad in this respect as full-house trackday rubber, though; the flipside is they fade rather quickly on track in the dry on a heavy-ish car compared with the latter.
This was the Japanese-spec version though (Toyo Trampio R1R) as there were no E-marked R1Rs available back then. At least to the eye and on the spec/technology sheets, the two seem identical.

That is a good point chap about the cold - mine came with these stickers on ( E-marked versions ) which is worth bearing in mind for winter usage
If you're looking for that kind of tyre for daily use perhaps look at the Yokohama AD08, like the R1R it sits between Yokohama's top range sports tyre and their road legal semi slicks. It also is rated down to -10C.
I've been using them for 3000 miles or so on my MR2 Turbo and they're great wet or dry.
They're also a slightly higher treadwear rating and come with more tread depth than the R1R. These things plus the lower operating temperatures are what made my mind up over the R1R

Important Care And Usage Instructions:
The ADVAN Neova AD08 was developed using high performance
compounds which become brittle at low temperatures, and therefore
should not be used in certain conditions. ADVAN Neova AD08 tires thus
must be stored or used only at temperatures at or above 14°F
(-10°C) to maintain performance characteristics and to avoid any
damage to the tire or injury to persons or property.

AD08 review from an STi Type R driver
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Yokohama/Advan-N...
"Staggering! These are the best tyres I have ever used on my Impreza's. I have used Goodyear GSD3's (V-pattern's), Falkern Super Steel 595's, Toyo T1R's (terrible), Goodyear Vreddie's.
I went from the T1R to the AD08 and whilst in the tyre fitter's it was obvious seeing the two side by side (the T1R's had only completed 1K miles), the construction of the Yokohama was far superior. The carcass was very solid - sidewall and main tread part. A friend who was with me joked they hardly need inflating.
First drive out (120 miler round Shropshire's finest B-roads) was a revelation. Basically they seemed to totally sort my Type R Impreza. Turn-in was direct with good feedback. General road feedback was good too, allowing a more fluid, connected drive. Grip levels (dry) are brilliant, all the way up to the limit. When the limit is reached there is a wide amount of safe, easily explorable progression. There's no sudden letting go.
The shoulder's of most tyres would be showing signs of wear after about 1K miles (car only used for blats out), but the Yoko's have not worn in this manner, staying good
In short I am very impressed with the tyre, they do everything you could want from a tyre and do it well. They seem to suit the Impreza very well indeed. Highly recommended, and will buy again "

He he, that review is mine... yes, the AD08's are still going well on the Type R. The sidewalls are very stiff which gives incredible laser like steering input feel. Dry grip is off the scale with a nice safe broad limit... blah blah just as above really.http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Tyre/Yokohama/Advan-N...

Those cost ~140 fitted and were 17". I have a Forester STi which needs 18" summer rubber (225/45, or 235), but AD08's are almost 200 a corner in Foz size...
I've been trying to find a lower priced stiff sidewalled tyre but am struggling. Bridgestones are historically stiff walled, but have stopeed the RE070 which I would have gone for.
Others... Kumho XS, Dunlop DZ03G, Hankook S1 Evo2. Bridgestone RE-11 or Dunlop Direzza2's would have been high on the list but they are proving more tricky to locate... forget the Toyo's though
