How can we tax a car in this situation?????

Hi,

My mum is selling her car. At the moment it is declared sorn and she isn't insured on it. However it does have MOT until December.

The problem is, if someone comes to buy it, how are they going to put tax on the car because they are not insured on the car. And even if they call their insurance company there and then, they still won't have their insurance certificate until it arrives in the post.

So how do we go about getting it taxed so that they can drive it home that same day? It seems really complicated.

Any help would be appreciated!

Not sure, could the certificate be emailed, then go straight to the Post Office once it's printed?

get the certificate e-mailed, then they use the green new keepers supplement to tax it at a post office.

Can take up to 48 hours for insurance to show on database. Best bet is to have them get their insurance to email a copy to them, thats what i did with mine, buy i also had to go to the dvla to chance it from police to plg...

If they insure it and get the cert e-mailed or a web portal login (I know elephant and a few others offer a web login) then you could be kind enough to print the insurance cert off for them?!

OR

If they book an MOT the same day, they can legally drive it to a PRE-BOOKED MOT without tax, but they must still be insured.

Admiral will post a printable certificate online for you within 2 hours if you need it now. Or I think thats what the woman was trying to say a few weeks ago.

You can't tax a car online you have just bought. Firstly, it takes a while to show as insured on the database and secondly it will be sent to the wrong person which can cause all sorts of issues.

As others have suggested, new owner can get cover note emailed or faxed and do it at nearest post office. Simple.

My insurance certificate was available online immediately after I paid on the phone, with a handy link to login straight to the document. I printed it in the internet cafe next door to the post office and then taxed it in the post office. Then went to pick up the car.

That is with Admiral.

Swift insurance give you a PDF copy. Post office also used to do this last year and probably still do it.

So lots of choices then. I had a similar problem and used anther insurance to get 3 day insurance certificate then taxed it using that certificate so I could offer the vehicle with six months road tax.
