What car? Want big mpg's, big Bhp and big Torque. £6k budget
Discussion
Hi guys, first post hope this is the right section! Need some advice on car choice.
Currently have a VW 1.9 TDI 130 bhp, which is quite frugal at an average of 46mpg with commuting and has a bit of grunt when needed. Had a ride in a friends Jaguar Sport S-type at weekend and was pretty shocked at how disgustingly quick it was, more surprising was the 49 mpg on the trip computer. I was so impressed with the low rev pull, refinement, smoothness, sound and raw power I want to sell the VW asap!
Engine was the 2.7diesel V6 twin turbo, which has some pretty impressive specs...
Fuel consumption (urban) 29.2 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 49.7 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 40 mpg
0 - 62 mph 8.1 seconds
Top speed 143 mph
Cylinders 6
Valves 24 v
Engine power 206 bhp
Engine torque 320 lbs/ft
I have a budget of £5-£6k, frugal on fuel is the number one requirement, followed by as much bang for buck BHP+torque I can lay my foot on LOL
heres two examples I was looking at, would like suggestions as to alternative brands/models before I settle on the jags.

compared to my 130bhp vw yes LOL
I guess i've not been in many fast cars!
Why not stick with the Golf and get it chipped. Would then be about 170/180 bhp.

You will notice the difference
MPG will be slightly improved. Bang per buck its a winner.Of course if you need similar power to the Jag you could always swap it for a tweaked PD150

But forget the smooth and refined bit

Also twin turbo on a diesel makes me think double the (inevitable) trouble?

I doubt a cheap twin turbo V6 Jag will be a cheap runner when something goes wrong with it. It might look like a fairly cheap car to run day to day, but brakes, tyres, servicing, suspension cht be omponents, replacement engine parts etc, are going to be in another league compared to your current car. These big boys cars might be cheap to buy but the running costs aren't exactly "shoestring" stuff, make sure you know what you are getting into before you buy.
wow didnt expect so many replies already!
I've been scarred by mapping, after my old 1.9 tdi passat mapped to 150 clutch died after a month, followed by the con rod shooting through the engine block! Engine beyond repair
Putting the V6 s-type idea to the side for a moment
is the trade off of 0.8 second longer 0-60 worth the increased mpg on an x-type? 50 less bhp, and no v6 >>>
Fuel consumption (urban) 33.6 mpg
Fuel consumption (extra urban) 57.7 mpg
Fuel consumption (combined) 45.6 mpg
eg.

Is a tweaked PD150 simply a mapped pumpe duse 1.9 TDI?You will notice the difference

Concur the twin turbo fail would be an epic repair bill

I was kind of hoping they'd be a more reliable VAG branded car with this sort of engine available! i've got a quality VAG mechanic I use.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff

Must of missed that!
