Help with tyre speed rating

Hi all.....

I need to order some tyres which are 225/45 zr17 94y.

Is the speed rating the "z" or the "y"?

Any idea what the Z stands for?

The Z says it's over 150mph+ and the Y defines it as over 186mph.

I'm ready to be shot down but from what I learned recently after a popular tyre retailer got this all wrong on my car the above is correct and its to do with the length of time the tyres spend tested at the above mentioned speeds.

Look for "high load" also. This is what they got wrong on my car. Twas only when someone else did a puncture repair it was picked up. I went back to where the 235-40-17s were bought and pointed it out. They were so shocked at their error a hire car arrived in minutes as The correct tyres were not in stock. Incredible cock up, but impressive response.

Thanks for that...my initial problem was the my reg number was bring up the wrong tyres......205/55 r13.....whereas the actual tyres on the 170bhp model are 225/45 r17 94y.

Its my first time ordering online but saving £20 a tyre against depot price.

Good on you for looking for a good deal, make sure your savings aren't lost in fitting costs. Where I live dealers are reluctant to fit "supplied by others" tyres due to liability and insurance. Some do, but charge 30 a pop for The pleasure.
