It occurred to me while we were insuring my OH's MX5 tonight that we always carefully assess what limited mileage to put in to get an insurance quote, and yet we have never been asked what our current mileage is.

So do insurance companies just take it on trust?

Or is there some super-duper system whereby they access MOT records?

I'm not sure which seems least plausible.

My current insurance company asked in January when I took the policy out.

I'm sure they could check MOT's, but my insurance company take the cars mileage at the start of every year.

They would check if you had to make a claim that's a dead cert. If you had exceeded the agreed amount then you would get fked right off

Does it work the other way?

If you were well under the agreed amount do you get a refund?

I would expect that, but as I have never had to give my mileage when taking out a policy, how would they know how many miles I'd done?

They would check if you made a claim MOT has the mileage on every year.

More likely just charge you the difference, to be honest.

lol

Amazing how they get all sniffy about that, and give all manner of reasons why not.
"Well, we take into account that some drivers go over, and some go under.... blah blah blah".
"But you dont pay out if people go over, so how about that refund then? Go on, your shareholders won't mind!"
".....<dead tone>... "

I've wondered about this myself, surely if you were only a few thousand miles over your declared mileage when you made a claim you could just point out that your 'friend' borrowed your car for a while and did a few thousand miles himself i.e your declared mileage would be correct

Haha sadly not. My brother had a 12k policy but only ended up using the car 1k due to a variety of factors, no refund at all, not even a token amount of the renew quote but as soon as he asked for 6k limited mileage he was asked for copies of the MOT certificate - strange when "supposedly" the DATABASE has all the answers.......

Any time I've made an insurance claim they have never asked to see a service record or MOT certificate so unless they are checking electronically they don't check. To be fair I'm not on a heavily limited policy, and all claims have been due to other people but they have never made an effort to check how many miles I've covered.

I have a number of cars on limited mileage and have asked them directly how they would find out. They said in the event of a claim they would consider asking for all the MOT certificates and Service Schedules and these would have the mileage from one year to the next and then they would be able to check whether or not the policy was being adhered too!! Watch out! Doesn't pay to over insure and under insure either!

IMO that's st what if you lend your car to a friend for 2 weeks and they do 200 miles a day - insured on their policy to drive other cars?

Some either ask you to state the current mileage when you take up the policy and on renewel time. Others might ask for proof such as photo's, MOT certificate etc
