M40 this morning, just by Stokenchurch.

I followed a blue Renault for a bit on the middle lane overtaking lorries on the uphill section. The driver (young bloke )was using both hands to do his hair, looking in the rear-view mirror, primping himself etc. he must have been steering with his knees at about 80mph for well over 30 seconds.

As I passed him I gave a long blast, but he was totally oblivious to other traffic and didn't react at all.

Not sure why I'm writing this, but it's one of the worst examples of driving I've seen for a while.

He was doing 80 and not concentrating, you passed him (presumably going even faster) and blasted your horn which could have shocked into braking sharply or swerving into you.

If he's an idiot leave him to it and stay out of his way. He could have hacked you to death with a tail comb.

He was in the middle lane, overtaking at 80mph?

Sounds like he's a better driver than 90% of the people I tend to share the motorway with!

How was his car control?

Vanity aside, I must have driven a good few thousand miles with my knees over the last 20 years of driving in order to have a spot of lunch when time is too tight to stop or to give my arms and shoulders a rest if I'm in a particularly uncomfortable car.

biggrin Can't help but laughed out loud at this comment biggrin Agreed he is an idiot but I would not have blasted the horn at him as that might cause an accident as pointed out. Sadly nothing much can be done in this situation unless you have a passenger with a mobile that records his plates and actions.

Was his driving actually bad? Was he swerving around dangerously or anything?

Sounds fine to me, I steer with my knees all the time. Whilst texting, eating a sandwich and sipping on my Costa.

Well if he is indeed steering with his knees and looking into the mirror to pimp his hair I suspect it is classed as dangerous driving if caught red handed. What happens if the vehicle infront of him suddenly brakes or someone suddenly cuts infront of him? Will he have the sufficient time to respond properly?

Careless driving/ driving without due care and attention. I've been done for this before (minus the gel and primping). 6 points and £250 fine. The cop asked me how I was going to stop without my hands on the wheel, I bit my tongue.

Last time I checked you brake with your feet.

That is correct. Last time I checked you drive while looking forward not in the rear view mirror (unless reversing obviously).

I'm not sure if this still applies but when I the "E brake" part during my driving lessons I was told to hold the steering tightly with both hands.

That's hard enough to do as I won't have a free hand to keep the instructors hand off my thighs then....

I think the fact that people are actually trying to justify not having proper control of the vehicle (how can you have when you're not even touching the bit you're steering with), not concentrating totally on driving, and not maintaining proper forward vision, all whilst doing 80mph overtaking on a motorway, speaks volumes for modern attitudes to driving. frown
