Whining noise, altenator?

Hi,
My MX5 (2000 1.6) has developed a very annoying and worrying whining noise whilst travelling at high speed in a low gear. When sat on a dual carraigeway it will whistle for a second then the noise develops into a whine, then if I slow to say 50mph or so in 5th gear and lightly push on the throttle there is a grinding noise before turning into the whine again.
The car is a non LSD 5-speed car.
