£7000 Budget What Free Road Tax Convertible To Buy?

Having sold my MGB that was liable for road Fund Licence Payment, thought I would look at getting something that was pre 1973 but has more power and is comfortable for longer distance cruising. ( bigger ). Fuel consumption is not an issue, sporting style would be good, good spares availability would be ideal, OH requires it to be a convertible, but I would be willing to over look that if the car is cool enough!
Budget of around £7000.
What would you suggest.

i had a late 70s Alfa Spider 2000....and they made these before 73 too.

It was a very good refined tourer with a great engine and gearbox. Not an MX5 in the handling department, but probably more 'contemporary' than an MGB.

There's a very good spares network too....and they are appreciating

These are beautiful. Not sure about the performance of the 1800 although the later models had the 2.0 twin cam which had more than ample performance.
The spares and following seems to be quite strong.

Mercedes SL's are just in this price bracket for a fairly decent example, although rot was an issue and they drink a lot of fuel.

deltashad, that continental site is fascinating.
1972 Stag RHD on english plates as well.for less than £6000, in Germany mind but worth a look.
Will have to look into importing costs and loop holes.
