Surprisingly cheap motoring.

Being the family petrolhead, I've been charged with finding my younger sister a suitable replacement for her 10 year old Punto as she now has a short commute which involves some motorway driving.

Anyway, she's set her heart on a Toyota Aygo. I've found one on an 07 plate with just 11,000 miles on from a Toyota main dealer for £4200. Buying from them means a full 12 months MOT and warranty as well as European AA cover and Toyota Assist. Also included is MOT insurance in case it fails the next one.

It's the cheapness of the ongoing costs which has surprised me. It's group 1 insurance and road tax is only £20 a year. Decent brand tyres for the 14" wheels are £50 and winters are the same price. Full service at a main dealer is around the £130 mark (it only takes 3 litres of fully synthetic).

I suppose it might be a bit boring driving a 3 cylinder 1 litre car about but it suits her down to the ground.

They are cheap. I had a C1 for 3 years and the only thing I had to pay for each year was servicing. Tax was less than a tank of fuel MPG is really good and nothing went wrong with it apart from the rubbish parcel shelf breaking. The parcel shelves cost a bomb too.

Funnily enough, I've seen quite a few for sale where the parcel shelf has split in the middle.

Go to Citroen & ask for the same?

Identikit but wouldn't be surprised if there's a differential in running costs. However, buy the cheapest & take it to the best of three dealers. Strikes me as something that won't ever go even painfully wrong, so what price the comfort extras?


Also, I'd be so gutted if a split bit of fk knows what it is made of is the most pressing bit of my reliability worries.


Unless going Ka, seems like a good option to me.

I've tried to get her to consider the C1 or 107 however she seems to be taken in by the marketing...T4 sponsored by the Toyota Aygo.

We've got one, it's great, and really is a fun little thing to throw around. Surprisingly torquey engine, with a characterful thrum. It's ok on the motorways but is clearly built to a budget and with nothing that's not essential! Our two year old car developed a hole in the cheap 'carpet' in the footwell and that's with using mats (my wife seldom wears heals!). Also its picked up a couple of car park dings which I'm sure must be to with a thinner metal skin. Things like an inability to operate the passenger electric window from the drivers side, and a lack of interior light switch on the rear doors... Things that you took for granted may be omitted from an Aygo!

Servicing isn't quite as cheap as you think, 2 year service at our dealer was £180 plus something like £40 for a pollen filter (rennet on eBay, seconds to fit), and another £40 for a brake fluid change (which I declined as I think 2 years is pretty premature on a car of its type). Minor service (oil and filter) was around £100.

I like the car and it's pennies to run, but in hindsight i'd have rather have a bit less cost cutting and slightly more bulk.

My sister has one, she is 24 and got in new 18months ago.

Its been brilliant and I have had a go and its nippy, quicker than the Ka.

Hers is an Aygo Blue with built in bluetooth phone, ipod connection.

Its a cracking little car.

I think the Aygo is the best looking of the 3 to be honest
