Evening all, looking for a bit of advice following the purchase of a used car.
Car was bought in the middle of June, had been part ex'd at a main dealer and was on a private plate previously.
On collection was advised by the dealer that I wouldn't get anything V5C related there and then as they'd sent it off to the DVLA to sort the switch and my purchase.
Six weeks later I called them up to chase as I hadn't received anything in the post. They said they'd follow up with the DVLA and get a copy of the docs to me.
Another six or so weeks later and I still haven't had the copy docs or the new V5C.
Something just doesn't add up. Car is great but I'm starting to wonder what is going on and why I don't have the V5C. If it wasn't such a well known main dealer, I'd be jumping up and down but having given them time, they just haven't sorted it.
Any dealers who could give me a steer on this? Will be calling them tomorrow for an explanation and if it's not satisfactory, I'm getting to the stage where I am tempted to tell them I'm returning the car.

Fell for that once, if they don't want to hand over the new keeper slip then although you own the car legally it causes all kinds of problems in reality.
Same in reverse selling a car to a dealer, they will handle all the V5 stuff and it ends up being resold without a change of owner.
I'd strongly, Edit: strongly, advise writing a letter to the DVLA saying the seller failed to inform them.

That's what the dealer has said they've done.
Appreciate it would be easy for me to do it, don't see why I should have to do that when I've bough an approved used car.
Just makes me think there's something amiss.
But if you can sort it out yourself quickly and easily for the sum of £25 why wouldn't you?Appreciate it would be easy for me to do it, don't see why I should have to do that when I've bough an approved used car.

There is nothign really amiss. The "new" V5 with the new registration number on it will have gone directly to the previously registered keeper. They almost never, ever, send it on to the dealer in my experience even if you give them a SAE and tell them that if they do not send it on they may be liable for fines, tax etc.
It is just a consequence of a rather slow and laboured private plate change system which often isn't fast enough to keep up with the speed with which a car can change hands.
The dealer should have pestered for the V5 from the last owner or, as others have suggested, just pay up the £25 and fill in the form for a new one in your name.
You own the car - the V5 has very little to do with ownership.

Private plates are an ASS for dealers,I think they should be fecking banned!
We take in van regularly with them on, you either tell the punter to whack it on retention which means 6 weeks at least waiting around or do the transfer to the van they're buying which takes 2 weeks then you ahve a van on your pitch for upto 6 weeks waiting for the v5 to come through to the now previous owner of the van.
Thats where it gets tricky with cars being quick turn around as the dealer sticks the car on the pitch and sells it before they have all the stuff back from the plate transfer meaning delays, dvla cock ups and confusion!
I had one once where the dvla wiped out the details of the van the plate came off so no v5 ever came through and the van (which we had re-sold and dispatched by then on the old plates/disc) didnt officially exist anymore!
Im sure o.ps is just a dvla cock up and the dealers only fault is selling the car before all the paperworks come back but it needs sorting so a strongly worded email/letter is next recourse.
