When did you last replace an exhaust ?

Not talking about putting a Stainless Steel system on your 2 year old ST or similar for more power and noise but replacing standard with standard.
I remember when I was first driving in 1988, myself and my mates were always having to get exhausts replaced, the old Fords and Vauxhalls we tended to have used to kill and exhaust in 18 months.
Fast forward to now and it doesnt seem to happen, my last Saab is still on its original despite being 8 years old, no sign of it needing a new one, our T5 was the same age when we sold it, the end was a bit scabby but no need to change it. the last one I replaced was on our Sharan at six years old, it snapped the backbox off during the test drive when I was selling it but then that was not a great quality product. I am thinking that potentially modern fuel systems and catalysts result in less acidic condensation in the exhaust as the fuel is burnt more completely and the compsition of the gas changed by the catalyst so it doesnt rot the metal as readily, I cant imagine the manufacturers have upped the quality that much on the OEM parts.
So, do car exahusts still disentegrate like they used to or are they generally lasting the life of the car ?

Ive recently had to replace the complete exhaust system on my 3.2 carrera at a cost of £2500 incl service and a couple of minor bits needing doing... 
On the plus side, it had survived with more putty than a pollyfilla factory for the last 2 years and the system had lasted approx 23 years...

Think it's because the lead or something else in leaded fuel used to rot the mild steel.
Diesel and unleaded don't do this.
Dont think Lead is an oxidization agent but exhaust gas is a pretty nasty chemical cocktail, some of the byproducts are acidic or oxidizing, it figures that a 1981 1.0 Fiesta produces more crap as the combustion process was controlled with a carb versus a mapped fuel injection system with Lambda control, the cat converts some of the nasties into less harmful stuff like Carbon Dioxide, water and Nitrogen so that may be part of the improvementDiesel and unleaded don't do this.
Fiat coupe 20v turbo had it for maybe 7 years sold it when it was c14 years old had to replace system at 13 years old system was fine but tiny section on the back was rusted through.

Honestly I can see pattern exhausts becoming extinct for many brands and models as they will hardly ever sell any!!!

£2500 - Jesus, I have a Dansk system on my 944, they are a lot cheaper than for a 911, in fact get a fairly decent whole 944 for that ! is there some kind of 911 tax going on here or is it a complex item, well done on bogging it for so long.On the plus side, it had survived with more putty than a pollyfilla factory for the last 2 years and the system had lasted approx 23 years...

ooh errr)) I had to replace the back box and connecting pipes on my Leon after 110k or so miles. Rust, noise, holes. But I do think it's relatively rare to need a full exhast system replaced these days from rust and the likes.

My first car was a 91 Escort with a wheezing 1.4 which had the whole exhaust system replaced twice in the 4 years that I owned it and then I had a 93 XR3i which destroyed the middle section of the exhaust during my ownership.
After that I moved to a 98 Passat and it was on the original system at 11 years old. In contract my brother has a 95 Golf which has had one non original exhaust part replaced but doesn't kill them anywhere near as the old Fords did.
No idea if the Passat had a stainless system but it had about 90,000 miles on the clock when I sold it.

2005 Clio 182 exhaust went in 2009
Only 4 years old, the exhaust rusted through.
Because it was a twin exit job renault wanted something like 750 for a direct replacement
got a stainless exhaust for 300 witha lifeti.e warranty.
My 98 passat is still on Its first exhaust, with no signs of heavy duat

Last exhaust I/we replaced was the back box on my pops' Focus about 6 years ago about year before he sold it due to the baffles vibrating, nothing actually wrong with the exhaust in terms of leaks or rusted through though.
I can't really say we've had to replace any since. My Vivaro is on its original stainless exhaust fitted from the factory, (at least no mention of an exhaust in the service history) I was under the van on Saturday to see where my handbrake cable had snapped from and the exhaust was still like new. The van is 8 years old and nudging 140k on the clocks, quite remarkable really.

Five years ago I ordered a Larini exhaust to put on my MX5, which was 8 years old at the time and still on its original exhaust.
However, I put an offer on my flat so needed the money for the deposit so I cancelled the order.
Having a mortgage I can only justify getting an after market exhaust when the old one rots... I'm still waiting, now at 13 years old and with 163k on the clock; the bloody thing shows no sign of giving up.

I replaced a small section at the front of my Saab 9-5 Aero a month or so back. Ended up having to remove the full system from the turbo back to get access as the bolts were knackered-so knackered in fact that when I hit them with a hammer the bolts disintegrated and the system came apart
Looked at the rest of the system and it seems fine. And looks original. The cars 12 years old and has done 194k. Not too shabby
