Why the rage?

Just had a text from my missus, she started a new job last week, she's temporarily staying at her cousins until our new house purchase is finalised. So, new job, new town, new route to work...

She ends up in the wrong lane on a roundabout, it happens. She then indicated and moved over. At which point an A4 driver decided to tailgate through the next 40 section, she pulled over after overtaking and the guy was gesturing for her to pull over. Her worst failing is she's a bit of a timid driver, so the fact she checked and pulled over must've meant there was a lot of room. She was left scared by an idiot and it really is ridiculous...

What were you going to do matey (RF09 HZK) if she had pulled over? Beat up a 20odd year old school teacher just because she was in the wrong lane? And were you really that angered by someone changing lanes on a roundabout or is it that you feel a woman in a yellow smart car got one over you? Grow up and have some patience...

I've often wondered myself why or how someone can get so wound up from the simplest of things. Fair enough, I've had a go at people myself but only when they've done something very stupid. One was when a taxi driver suddenly accelerated to cut me off when merging, nearly forcing me into some cones. That normally wouldn't cause me to react the way I did but my OH was pregnant and I think that may have tipped me over the edge.

Another time was when a car decided to come onto my side of the road to overtake a car at the last second, nearly causing me to crash head-on into him. Again not normally something I'd react to, but he got out of his car and started having a go at me! That then made me get out myself and shout him back into his own car and to fk off!

Normally I couldn't give a toss what happens on the road really. I drive for a living, so if it did I'd probably end up having a heart attack. I just let things go. I always think, one day with driving like that day, the inevitable is going to happen, so I just let them get on with it.

It's probably a spot where there's a queue to go straight on, and a clear lane to go right. So there's always idiots that take the right hand lane and push in at the last minute.

I hate people like this. If it was a massive bloke in a big car he probably wouldn't of done a thing. I've noticed people seem to try and take the piss much more since I bought my MX5 than in my saxo, until they get close and realise I'm obviously not a hairdresser or a woman lol.

I am definitely at a point now where, mainly from reading PH for so long, I can usually predict situations that cause OTT indignation and either avoid altogether or at the very least back-off and give room for whatever it is that is coming. I like to think that I am always prepared to prevent trouble rather than have to react last minute. Also taking things personally like its a slight on you as an individual is so easy to do but again must be avoided.

I have absolutely nothing but plenty of time for people who find themselves in the 'wrong' lane (only wrong because its not taking them where they're going, not life failure FFSFSFFS!!) and will give them all the time in the world to get where they want to safely. After all it is someone's wife/husband/son/daughter and I would want exactly the same for my own.

I still get irked when people don't indicate at roundabouts or similar lacking of awareness that causes hesitation or unnecessary stopping. But it soon passes and within seconds I have usually forgotten about it.

I see pleb like behaviour daily but again just brush it off. Thankfully it is rare but when people have done utterly reckless and stupid things that endangers life in front of me, I do not hesitate to report them for it for whatever good it may/may not do.

I think if everyone backed off a little, didn't take things so personally all the time and gave more room so much of this rage could be avoided.

Call them a wker, or don't let them in. Don't chase them down the road, tailgating and threatening.

Lots of people do stupid things, we've all been in the wrong lane whether by accident or on purpose. I'm sure this guy has does it before and I bet it was the person he merged in front who was in the wrong for beeping or swearing.

I just don't quite get it, then again I tend to ride the bike in traffic so don't have time to get involved in rage incidents.

I picked up on this, as it is something that amazes me on a regular basis.

Sometimes if I'm somewhere unfamiliar I may need to be in the right or left lane, and so need to move over. I always try to do so courteously, but more often than not people will accelerate to close the gap. Why is this? Is it punishment that I haven't rehearsed my journey in streetview to learn the exact moments I need to change lanes? Or is it the human nature that trying to annoy and irritate random people is becoming more common?

I don't accelerate to stop people changing lanes, as this is how accidents happen. If they are idiot drivers without a clue, then I would prefer they were in front of me where I can keep my eyes on them!

Or just let them get on with it and not mess with your head. There's plenty of research on this; people change when in a car.

A few years ago I was on an unfamiliar motorway in three lines of traffic all running at 50mph one wet evening. The junction I wanted was approaching so after indicating for a long period time before moving into lane 1 from 2 when I saw a gap appear. I suddenly realised that the headlights I'd seen on the rear view mirror weren't in the passenger door mirror, a split second later I'd collided with an Mercedes E class side to side.

The Mercedes' driver had decided that he wasn't going to let a "posh" sports car '"push in front of him" (his first words on stepping out of the car) so had suddenly closed the gap to the car in front when he saw me moving over. Unfortunately It was right in my blind spot so I never had a chance of seeing him.

It messed up his evening and ruined my driving record - needless to say his report to the insurers was a pack of lies. .

Sorry to hear about your partner, typical Audi caveman mentality (Putting the 'woman' in her place). Report the tt. Sometimes when filtering on the R1 you get people trying to block me by squeezing the gap, as i pass slowly they get an earful of carbon cans at 14K rpm.

It's a regular occurance at roundabouts now, just part of macho mans driving day I'm afraid. I just go around the roundabout to confirm my exit then indicate and use it on the next lap, less hassle from the tunnel vision nutters.

Sometimes it's just easier and/or safer to continue to where the 'wrong lane' takes you. If I'm in the wrong lane to the right, I'll usually go around the roundabout to correct the error. Harder to to that if you're in the wrong lane to the left, especially if you don't know where the next roundabout or side road turning opportunity will be. The worst situations are busy approaches where you're unsure of your route until the direction signs. If you're not in the correct lane at this point, you indicate to signal your intent to move across. Cue drivers visibly closing up to the car ahead, not allowing the slightest gap into which you could slide. You are then forced to either crawl alongside in the hope that someone will see sense, or you stop and irritate the drivers in the lane behind you. This attitude stinks, and I think may be the cause of a lot of incidents of people forcing their way across into small gaps without indicating - they fear that if they do it properly, other drivers will close up to prevent them moving. The sad thing is, as often as not, the car which you've just allowed into 'your' stream of traffic will be going to a different destination to you, so will turn off your route shortly anyway, and you'll be back into the same space on the road that you would've been in anyway.

Oh! Don't get me started on the idiots who choke up roundabouts when their exit isn't clear. Does it really need a yellow box/keep clear painted on the road for idiots to realise that it's in the best interests of a healthy traffic flow for them not to block someone else's route across said roundabout? This is how gridlock and general mayhem is caused. Do they not consider that an ambulance may not be able to get to their partner/parent/child in an emergency as a direct result of their petty 'winning' attitude?
