Hey,

I'm looking for the "new"/2008+ Audi A4 Saloon for my partner, but...... I only have an £8k budget! So of course I'll be looking at 100k+ on the clock. Most people I ask say things like:

"yes, that's not high"
"it will go for 200k easy"
"doesn't matter its an audi!"

That's all fine and well but how do I pick the right one? What key things to look for with this model?
And is the mileage really no issue... because I just saw a 1-owner on sale that has done 143k miles in 4 years! Surely anything isn't fair game?

P.S. I can't find ANY website (i've searched about 30 respected sites) that can tell me which models/engines are chain or belt driven??? Please help!

Thank you for the suggestions. I'm looking for the new shape only and normally only get about 5-10 searches from most websites. Have my eye on this http://www.motorstopdudley.co.uk/used-cars/audi-a4...

They are all belt driven engines (with the v6 exception above) as i recall. Iirc, the cambelt change is around 80k, 5 years. Maybe someone can confirm it, but i'd put my mortgage on me being correct when it comes to belt or chain.

I'm quite open as the budget is low for a new shape A4. I would prefer a petrol though as the mileage won't be "too" high.

I think the new shape comes in only 1.8 or 2.0 TFSI in petrol, are they all chain? Are there any new shape diesels with a chain?
Thank YOu

Thank you for your help, so I will have to look for a changed belt since they're all over 100k in my budget.

I think a few new ones have chains, first paragraph here http://www.honestjohn.co.uk/carbycar/audi/a4-b8-20...

But new no use to me

In that case, you can probably ignore me and everything i've said! biggrin

The one thing i can be certain of however, is that when i was looking at A4's not that long ago, i was put off by the power outage of these new engines. The 1.8t has very little torque, and wont do 60mph in less than 10 seconds (10.2 according to Parkers)

I was suprised, as the 2.0t has an extra 80bhp (from 0.2 litres, how does that work?!?!) and can do 60 in sub 7 seconds.

Im unsure if power and speed matters to you, but it might be worth a consideration if you're not into having a slow car. I cant imagine that 1.8 is much fun;

Why the obsession for the newer versions? Up to you of course, but IMVHO the things looked a lot better before the single frame bling grill. 8k should get you a decent fairly low mileage S4 B6. Yum!

just Parkers being a bunch of numpties, 1.8T FSI has 170 odd bhp and <9s to 60

You're right it is an obsession rather than logic towards new version, but it's actually just about looks for her i think - i'm the practical person who just has to find what i'm told to... OR she'll go and get it herself for a few grand over what she's meant to pay!

Thank you to both of you for your info and input. I think I'm ever more leaning towards petrol over diesel sepite the mileage on the cars. should be more fun for me when i get to drive the car on the odd occasion wink even more reason for the 2.0 too i suppose!

The OP has emailed me regarding this so thought I'd post a reply here for the benefit of all.

The 2.0 TFSI and 1.8 TFSI (both EA888 units unless I'm mistaken) are chain driven. The diesels are belt unless its a V6. I don't know about the bigger petrols.

Not the same thing at all, wake up.
