Where would you postion yourself?

As you approach this roundabout, and intending to go straight across (second exit - carrying onto Salford Rd), whereabouts would you put yourself?
To the left or to the right of the feeding road...

I had an incident this morning with a van driver where I was waiting at the giveway line (marked with the red box), positioned on the lefthand side of the lane.
He came alongside of me on the right (green box).
We both set off together and I got an earful of his horn and given the 'beans' as he was actually going straight on.
A bit further down the road (well outside his works), when questioned as to exactly why I was a w
ker, he took rather a sheepish tact about it and couldn't really explain anything as why he thought what he thought.
It seems to happen quite a lot here though with most drivers seeming to believe the left hand lane (there are no 'lane' markings on the approach road but it's easily wide enough for 2 cars) is for turning left and the right hand 'lane' is for either straight on or I presume turning right.
This aerial shot (taken before the building of the 4th exit) shows that the it's not quite a perfect roundabout as it's a bit staggered but surely you can't be going straight on from the right hand side of the lane??

It seems the only conflict could be on the single lane exit you both wanted. But that could happen all day because people from all directions would need to take the exit either behind or in front of someone else.

I see no problem with using either "lane" although none are painted. Is it a new and unfinished r'about?

If I was heading left, I'd be sitting where you were. If I was intending to go down Salford Road, I'd be sitting where he was.
The roundabout is wide enough to accommodate two cars side by side, so it is fair to assume that people sitting in the left at the give way would be turning left from the roundabout.
Of course, you need to be aware that people don't always do what you expect them to do so be ready to accommodate their actions regardless, but if it's wide enough for two cars, and the green box was intending to go down Salford Road too, then I'd query as to whether their road positioning was correct.
I've seen everything at roundabouts though, from red box taking the first exit (cutting off green box) to green box going all the way round from their position and back the way they came, to green box straightlining the roundabout and embedding themselves in the side of red box half way round, so nothing surprises me anymore!
ETA - obviously as soon as I had passed the first exit, I'd be giving a clear signal that I intended to take the next one. If that exit is blocked by another car on the nearside, then there's no harm in orbiting the roundabout to ensure you can get over to the left in time for the exit to be taken.

I've just realised where this is. It's about 2 miles from where I live!
I think the issue is that everyone expects you to turn down to Little Hulton from the left lane and right to Four Lane Ends from the right lane. The straight ahead exit is such a minor exit, so you probably just startled him. Plus everyone is still in 100mph mode after getting off the M61.

Answer woulod've been the same when I saw the roudabout, so didn't bother with the link to location. Just local knowledge helps to understand the van drivers viewpoint (not that he's right), just that the accpeted practice of old would've been left to Little Hulton, right to Four Lane Ends with no straight on.I've only just started using this road again recently (it's much quicker then the East Lancs into Manchester) and forgot how much trouble this thing causes.

Going into Manchester, you just keep following it (the A6) though Walkden, under the M60, through Swinton and eventually it brings you out at Pendleton (past the childrens hospital) and back onto the East Lancs at The Heights.Where does it go straight on that helps dodge the East Lancs?
I find that at the time I go (9:15 ish) it's still a bit busy but keeps moving and much better than the hit or miss Lancs.

I must be half asleep. I was looking at it that you're coming off the M61. I can see the van drvers viewpoint even more now with left being off to the M61, and right striaght on to carry on down the East Lancs. Still doesn't make him right and you wrong though. I find that at the time I go (9:15 ish) it's still a bit busy but keeps moving and much better than the hit or miss Lancs.
I know where the A6 goes, I used to live opposite the old Beechams factory!
