BMW 19" 225M Wheel refurb (all 4)

Hi,

Just had a quote for £160 per wheel for a refurb (spray+lacquer) for my E92 wheels. I appreciate they are a lot of work. The previous owner had them poorly refurbished, and now the paint is peeling off. Would like to get them protected before the winter, what options do I have, and does that price seem about right? (Going through official BMW channels in Croatia - so they will be refurbished to BMW standards).

Shocking price,and if you'd got that figure quoted in the UK it would be a pisstake of the highest order.

Do you ever come back to the UK? If you do,I'd suggest you wait,I pay around £55.00pw for a FULL refurb.

£160 per wheel seems rather expensive. Usually a good job is well under £100 per wheel.

Sorted that for you £160 a corner is a hell of a lot... cant offer any more help with your location. My local refurber charges £70-80 a wheel dependent on finish.

Couldn't you sell your nackered ones and buy brand new for cheaper than that?

Yes, 1 piece. The rear's are 255 wide.

Hmm, thanks - will present this to them.

To be fair, they have fixed other parts of the car for _peanuts_ (for example I had the front bumper sprayed, fixed, the car was low-loadered back and forth, and a full clean, for £95. A woman drove in to the back of me yesterday, minor damage to the rear bumper, will be completely resprayed for colour match, £165 all in.

So based on this, the wheel price does seem expensive. I just assumed it was very labour intensive, but I guess they strip them, and bead blast, so it should be fast.

P.s. yes come back to the UK every year, so this car will be coming back in June. It will be garaged over the winter, when it's -20c and snow, as I can't seem to get winter tyres which are 35 profile. I have a cheap Astra to use during this period, with 4 winter tyres.

£160 per wheel is silly money for a straight paint on a 1-piece alloy wheel.

No,the tyres are 255 wide,the wheel is 9" wide.

No, the wheels are £500+ VAT from BMW (genuine), and I have tyres on which are £355 each (rear). It wouldn't be cheaper to do that.

Yes, sorry, they fit 255 tyres. 225 on the front.

I live abroad so that isn't an option unfortunately - and I don't want the hassle of having a spare set of wheels to sell.

It was more to put the cost into perspective - for £160 a corner you could buy a complete new set and throw the old ones away.

Yes, I understand - but I don't think I can get wheels for £160 a side, with re-balancing, and fitting. They just aren't that cheap. Reps might be, or second hand wheels, but then I would want them checked for cracks, because they are prone to that.

I will probably wait until I drive back, and touch up the paint falling off with lacquer to protect for the winter.

...and that's why I'd never buy "genuine" BMW alloys - the phrase "rip-off" doesn't quite do it justice.
