No Brakes

is this just me? or does anyone else play the no brakes game. ie where you try to use your brakes as little as possible, and just use engine braking and planning ahead? just genuinely curious to see if anyone else tries driving like this, i find that most of the time its much smoother.

oh and i do brake when the lights are red ha, even i think thats not a hot move to run them to avoid using your brakes.

Isn't that just good driving? My brake pads seem to last vastly longer than most people I know. Another game is watching some impatient tw*t carving through traffic and by using your brain, match his progres using minimal acceleration, timing of lights etc.

Yeah it's good fun. There's a really long sliproad near me leading to a roundabout, on a very slight downhill gradient. Trying to judge when to lift off to coast to the roundabout and get around it without braking is a real challenge!

Yep, pop it in first at 60 MPH and let out the clutch gently to slow down.
It takes practice not to over rev the engine of course but it saves on brakes.

Not doing it properly then - extra points for using the gears to slow the car appropriately so you arrive just as they turn green.

Brakes are easier to replace than clutches.

Unless it's the inboard rear discs on an XJS.

Not to mention that doing that will knacker the synchromesh in fairly short order

I do this on some trips to work, it's only a 7 mile journey so not too hard to achieve it. You get to the other end feeling far more relaxed as well I feel.

I do it every morning on the way from work. When I realised that my car went around corners better when accelerating rather than letting off the pedal it made the game even better, I never knew that.

Nope. Never got taught that in driving lessons, neither do most people judging by hard hard they brake around the slightest bend.

I went from Richmond, London to Bournemouth once and the only time I used the brakes was at Fleet Services. This was about midnight though, and traffic lights were on my side. Also got over 40 mpg out of a 2.8 petrol that trip, so it does improve economy somewhat.
