What is the best everyday Sports car
Discussion
i need help - and not just mental help. This is probably the ijmpoosible question to answer, but I am looking for an affordable, reliable, modern sports car.
I have recently bought an S-max for the family (as we have suddenly expanded and require a 7 seater). Unfortunately due to my wife being unable to drive due to her disability, this is the car I have to drive every day to work. Although a lovely family car, after the first day I missed fun and acceleration, and started to dream of a little sports car just for me. Although it is just a dream, I can see that this is more likely to become a reality, hence the reason of this blog.
I have daily being looking at sports cars (basically teasing myself to the point that I'll have to get one!), the car which I love is a TVR S2, as this falls within a justifible price of £2.5 - £5k. The only probably may be the beautiful V6 noise and my elderly neighbours.
Therefore can anyone suggest any other car, or give justification to the S2.
Basic requirements
- Every day car to work
- Don't want a project
- Will accept usual minor issues - but not a car which requires bottomless pockets.
- not to old (mid 80's plus), so it has recent technology
- reasonable mileage.
Please help my mid life crisis!!

Skip MGfs because of reliability (sorry k-series fans), skip anything based on a saloon.
MR2s, MX5s, SLKs, S2000, a Robin Hood and what looks like a drivable Elise with no bodywork which isn't recorded as an insurance job.

The M3 has to be disqualified because no matter how fast it goes and how well it handles it doesn't fit the label of "sports car", not even as a drophead. The BMW Z3/Z4 is the sports car of the range surely?
MX5 almost goes without saying, it is the default choice - and the Boxster has to be there too. Honda S2000 I suppose but it never really appealed to me.
You should be able to get a nice condition Toyota MR2 for that sort of money or even an Audi TT drophead or Merc SLK.
The final choice would be on the balance of comfort/image/fun/performance and running costs.

Mk2 Toyota MR2.
Large cabin for a 2 seater, comfortable, great seating position, fun to drive, ultra reliable as you'd expect from a 90's Toyota and plenty of storage space to top it off
5 years/40k+ miles in my Turbo and it's never ever let me down.
A lightly breathed on turbo will crack 300hp no problem meaning around 240hp/tonne.
