Why don't Porsche....
Discussion
Start making air cooled 911s again, 993s can cost as much as a new 991, you can buy a garage full of 996s for the price of a 993, I bought the Adidas LA trainers I had lusted for as a kid the other day, Adidas had remade them, perhaps Porsche should do something similar, bung an air cooled motor in a 991, make it look all old, make a proper racket and perhaps recalibrate the electronics so it will leave the road more readily, they would sell thousands !
Is this a joke post?
What makes you think manufacturers can make cars like this these days?
You won't find a single car on sale these days that isn't:
- Water-cooled
- NCAP crash-tested
- Fitted with fuel injection
- Fitted with emissions controls
An air-cooled Porsche fails on every one of these essential traits of a modern car.

You really haven't thought this through, have you?doogz said:
A less powerful, easier to crash car. And you think they'll sell thousands?
They won't.
Some people might be interested, but not really the general public/target market.
There was some irony innate in my post, however I was kind of wondering whether an air cooled 911 could ever happen, kind of thought emissions may be an issue but wondering if it could happen, could any car ever be air cooled again ?They won't.

Was perhaps expecting a light hearted debate....

I said bung an air cooled motor in a 991 so that is the crashworthiness. What makes you think manufacturers can make cars like this these days?

No reason why air cooled can't be fuel injected or fitted with emissions controls
Ok, realistically the people who buy them new wouldn't entertain it, it will never happen, I know that
Ok, so, perhaps forgive me for the frivolous and flippant nature of the original post, would be interested to see, hypothetically, regardless or marketing, whether it could happen.

Sorry, my post was a bit rude. But this is basically what killed the Beetle worldwide. No reason why air cooled can't be fuel injected or fitted with emissions controls

Air cooled isn't really the reason for buying an old 993 as far as I know, it's because they're smaller and offer the traditional 911 driving experience. Had the 993 been water cooled it would still be sought after.
Maybe there is a case though for Porsche to produce something like the 993, a smaller car with more traditional feel, floor hinged pedels etc and they flog it at £150k. They'd flog a fair few

Looking at the bloke next door's base model Carrera every day I think I'd rather one of them than the 997 C4 that parks a couple of doors down.
It looks so perfect and so small compared to the modern iteration.
If I have an automotive regret it's not buying a 993 some years ago for 16K and then turning down another 993 varioram for $22K back in 2010.
I'll never own one now, they're too expensive for what they are. The sweet spot of price/performance/desirability has passed and moved on into 996 Turbo territory for me.

As nice as that would be, there are emissions & crash safety laws/regulations that probably wouldn't allow it to be built again. It's a shame indeed, because there are alot of older cars that I think would sell very well if they were sold today.
Rover mini cooper being a good example. Given the choice, I'd happyly pay £7000 for one of those over the superminis of today.

If you want to look at them individually, Morgan might have something to say about that.
They get through on being a low volume manufacturerYou will find many cars on sale today?

I may be missing something here.
I'm not sure how or why the manner in which an engine is cooled has any bearing on how it is fuelled, nor how it will fail emissions tests. IIRC the Porsche 914 was both fuel injected and air cooled, and surely a catalytic converter cares not whether water or air cools its parent engine.
