Hi guys

Toying with the idea of tightening my budget and getting rid of my muched loved Audi A4 (Huge VW fan... hence the username) and getting something cheaper as I'm saving for a house

Now, its easy to spend 1k on a car but I know myself and if its not quite warm/hot hatch for example I will get bored and chop it in for something else to soon, so I want it to last 2 years maybe? Mileage won't be huge, upto 6-7k a year

What should I buy? I quite fancy a Punto HGT as they are cheap but do have relaiabilty issues, Saxo... I couldn't bring myself to drive one and a 106 Gti is almost the same?

Any other suggestions, decent cars etc?

The OP was trolling for this answer, right?

Ha ha, you could have a point, had about 12 Golf Gti's though, done to death? Considered a MK3 16V as I haven't had one, but findly one in decent condition maybe an issue

16v Corrado? It wouldn't be great for that money, but they are around.

£1k to keep over a year I'd go Japanese will be bland but reliable;

Primera GT
Almera GTi
MR2 mk2
Civic VTi or CRX

Look to spend a fair bit to "get it sorted" if you're planning track days/b-road blasts. Cost me more than the car to get it sorted with tyres, ARBs, alignment, lighter exhaust and servicing in general (calipers/alternator/discs/pads). It's unbelievably planted now though.

Throwing in a non turbo Impreza which a couple of people on here seem to be running.

Plenty of mx5s and mk2 MR2s in budget.

Or how about a Pug 306 Gti/ Citroen Xsara VTS?

Leftfield choice, these are well speced, cheap, and have an interesting/ reliable engine;
Seat Toledo 2.3 V5.

Mk2 Golf GTi 8v.

Easy, I done this this when saving for my 1st house and it was a joy to run & sold it for more than I paid for it.

Will a mid-engined RWD coupe with pop-up headlights really seem bland after the A4 he has now?

+1 I had to do exactly the same with my Mk2 MR2.

Great shout on the Corrado, I have had 2 16v's aswell as 2 VR6s. Same applies as the MR2 tho, many of them need TLC which can be expensive.

Should get a very nice 306 gti6 for a bag of sand? Some have electrical problems and look for one with a recent cambelt change as they need it every 36k. Other than that they're good fun! rallye is slightly simpler (no air-con which usually doesn't work anyway and manual windows) and 0.1 faster to 62. It's not about outright power but they're quick enough to make you smile and overtake without drama.
