A good friend of mine has just told me that to regenerate a DPF, going 3 miles at 30mph in 3rd gear will do this. I flat out refused to believe this.

Can some knowledgeable people please comment on this, so I can convince him otherwise?

Tell him to try the 123 rule - 1st gear, 2 miles, 30mph.
The DPF will be the least of his worries

A light usually comes on when the DPF needs to regenerate. The handbook tells you how to do it, 3 miles at 30mph in 3rd gear is probably not it.

Mine book says 10 mins at 50mph in 4th. 1.6 tdi VAG.

How about just taking it for a hoon, would that not do it? And I mean, a proper hoon, as in red lining it in every gear for a while !

Probably, it is a case of everything getting up to temperature. The reason the light will have come on will be from short runs where the car hasn't had a chance to warm up.

I too would take it out for a spirited drive. Will also clear a load of crap out if the car is never driven hard.

I know of a good way of solving this problem.

Step one - don't buy a diesel.

Alternative step one - remove diesel engine and anciliaries.

Step two - insert V8

Ours (Mazda) is 40kph+ for 10 minutes at above 2,000rpm.

I have heard that it needs to stay over a rev threshold for a set period so anything involving a stop won't do meaning roundabouts, junctions etc are out.

In its best 'Koreanglish', mine states;

"When the malfunction indicator blinks, it may stop blinking by driving the vehicle at more than 60 km/h (37 mph) or at more than second gear with 1500 - 2000 engine rpm for a certain time (for about 25 minutes)"

And that's a pretty good bit of wording, compared to some of the translations in there!

I love the suggestion of red-lining a diesel in every gear as though there were going to be any pleasure in it at all.

We used to have this with Shogun's, to regenerate we used to go for a spirited drive up the M-way, pulling off after 5 or so miles, and then hard acceleration back up, so 50-70 a few times with foot to floor! Certainly worked for them

Any of the new Fiat Group engines will do the re-gen on idle. Which is nice.

I think he needs to follow the ABC rule: Always Buy CarswithoutaDPF
