Toyota Auris 2.2D SR180

Hi, anyone own/owned/had experience of these?

Am currently looking at options for a replacement daily hack of the Focus/Golf variety (diesel as will be doing about 20K PA) and recently noticed these but don't know much about them. Looks like an interesting alternative with 180 bhp and Toyota reliability.

Good/bad?

P.S. doesn't need to be the most exciting drive as will be the 'sensible' car of the garage.

I vaguely remember from the Toyota Owners Forum that there was an issue with head gaskets. I'm not entirely sure of the story, but I'm sure I heard something about Toyota extending warranties because of blown head gaskets.

Seem to remember poor mpg due to blocked EGR cropping up on these.

Mate of mine had very poor mpg on his. I believe it was back in to Toyota several times to no avail.

M8 had a red one was a a properly fast diesel and was suprisingly good on fuel, mid to late 40's if i recall and don't remember him having any issues with it. Id be quite tempted by one. Was like this:

These have proper suspension too, independent all round, I think so they ride well.

Same engine is in the Lexus is220d. My parents have one and as diesels go it ain't half bad.

I rode in a friends on a fairly long trip. It was reasonably quick and similar refinement to a Golf/Focus. The fuel economy was woeful and one of the brakes started binding halfway through the trip. It was a fairly neglected example but still, it put me off.

Avoid the 2.2d.

From personal experience a right nightmare. The 2.0D4D is a better choice (but one day you will need to replace the dual mass flywheel, clutch and probably the starter motor.)

You might find more internet horror stories around HGF by googling the issue in relation to Avensis' with the same engine.

My brother has one - to replace his wife's awful choice in CC Focus thing, which replaced their Impreza!

His only issue is that it's dull to drive - but if you have a weekend car then that shouldn't be an issue.
