Hi all,

I want a 'warm' hatch for under three grand. The insurance has already been payed for and the new car cannot be over group 17/8 depending on which insurance group system you are using. I am open to any suggestions!

Thank you.

Yes, but for 3 grand you will buy a pig.

Civic Type R or Leon Cupra R if you want to go up to hot hatch. For a "Warm" I'd look at Focus ST170s, Leon FRs, Maybe the Mark IV Golf GTI. I'm not sure a BMW 328i could be classified as a warm hatch really. If you want smaller then you might scrape a Fiesta ST, but more likely a Clio 172, Yaris Tsport, Polo GTI. There are a lot of choices out there. Are you leaning toward any in particular?

If you aren't bothered for a tech-fest, there's a 106 Rallye S1 that's just had a full respray up for £3k, having seen it, it's a real minter. The insurance is cheap, and it's one of the best warm hatches ever.

Nice example of a 306 GTI with cash left over.

Corolla T-sport

the fastest with a low insurance group and most importantly the cheapest to insure and well in budget.

edit : make sure you lower it

I think //threading a Corolla t-sport might be a tad biased, no? biggrin

Not a bad shout mind, but hardly the only option.

The 8L S3 is group 17/18 for pre/post-facelift and they start around the £2k mark now.

Insurance already paid for?

I thought it varied from car to car dependent on lots of different factors? I don't think it means you get a ticket to buy a car up to a certain insurance group...

Either way Group 17 is very low in terms of finding a performance hatch, warm is optimistic. Tepid maybe.

People are confusing this with the old money insurance groups... (which he says is the equivalent of 8..)

None of the above mentioned cars though.

Skoda Fabia VRS - Group 18
BMW 328i - Group 33
Honda Civic Type R - Group 34
Seat Leon Cupra R - Group 34
Ford Focus ST170 - Group 31
VW Golf MKIV GTI 1.8T - Group 29-33
Fiesta ST - Group 27
Renault Clio 172 - Group 31
Peugeot 306GTi6 - Group 30
Toyota Corolla T-Sport - Group 28
Suzuki Ignis Sport? Group 21
Saxo VTS? Group 27

However
Saxo VTR - Group 15
Fiesta Zetec S - Group 16 (more realistically the older Zetec-S which is group 17)
Toyota Yaris T-Sport - Group 15

Yes, I had read it as 17/18. D'oh!

So, just a bit warm then. Fiesta Zetec-S hands down out of those. Yaris Tsport is quicker but older for the price. And wouldn't handle as well. Or a C2 VTS(R?), interesting-looking little yokes if they fit in the insurance group. If you can push up a bit you get into the bottom end of Panda 100hp territory around £3800. Or Suzuki Swift 1.5s. Not going to set the world on fire, but probably a bit of fun.

How can the insurance be paid for already? You've not even chosen a car. It varies a fair bit.

Thanks for all the responses! Yes that is the kind of range I am looking at as the insurance is already paid! The price varies very little for me as I am only 18, it is virtually entireley based on insurace group!

I think you mean you have the money to cover the insurance for these. Hope you have checked both third party and full cop. Full is sometimes less than third. I hope you find a car you like.

Is it a business insurance policy with age-related restrictions?

If not and you've been gifted a set amount to spend on insurance, then the group rating goes out the window. Two group 17 cars of similar type could be thousands apart in policy cost. It would cost me more to insure the type of car that gets crashed a lot than something 'better' with a higher group rating that doesn't generally get punted into trees by young drivers.

HTH

ETA: a MINI ONE with a Cooper spec remap was always my suggestion as a decent first or second car when the yoofs at work asked me. You should get a decent one for £3k and everything bar the ECU Map is identical to a Cooper (or so I was reliably informed some time ago wobble ).

I was 18 nearly 3 years ago and looking for a new car, and that wasn't the case. Sure the insurance groups were a rough guide, but I often found cars that were higher insurance groups that turned out to be cheaper to insure than some lower grouped ones. You really just need to get a quote for every single car that takes your fancy, and then make a choice. I spent a huge amount of time getting quotes.

Well the stories is I have an insurance policy on a Fiesta that has unfortunately blew up on me! I now have 3k for a replacement car and need one asap. I want something that will last me two years till I can get something better. I have tried a golf and 206 of the same group and the premuim doesn't change.

You should probably try more than 2 cars.
