How do I stop my 306 jumping out of gear?

Hi all, if anyone has the will to humour a question about a knackered Peugeot gearbox I’d appreciate any input!
My well-used 306 has developed a bit of an issue where it jumps out of fifth gear whenever I lift off the throttle pedal abruptly. The problem doesn’t happen in the other four gears, just fifth. I’m a bit worried it might be something terminal and, although the car’s not worth anything, I can’t face the idea of scrapping it so I’d like to keep it going if possible.

I’m not sure if it’s just fifth gear simply being worn out, or if it might be caused by something else. Any ideas welcome!

Have you checked the Gearbox and Engine mounts/bushes yet? That would be the first place I'd look and next on the list would be the linkage.

It's a common issue with 306's. Just ask on the appropriate forum.

If its the gearbox I am thinking remove the cover on the end of the gearbox, the 5th gears are located under there, the big nut that holds the gear on has come undone.
Tighten it up and it will be fine.

Very rare I'm afraid pal. I only see a few out of a 100 or so that I do that have this issue.

Will most likely be worn dog teeth.

I had a mk1 MR2 that did this in 5th gear, it was easy to fix.

Just get a plank of wood, cut a V in one end, and cut the length to fit nicely between the rear bulhead and the gear lever when in 5th. So when on the motorway simply wedge the bit of wood between the gearlever and the bulkead and enjoy.

Not sure how this would work in a 306 though!

Sorts 1st 3rd and 5th

another bungy cord from seat belt anchors will sort 2nd and 4th

Had a Metro which ran like that for about a year

Worth a look for free though! And while your in there you can check the gears.
