Personal Plate Rules

If you buy a plate on the DVLA site of a prefix style, say AR51, it tells you it can only be used on a car from 2001 onwards. Is this strictly enforced? If it is, could I get one from one of the others sites and register my car with a newer plate?

It is strictly enforced and there is no way you can do it.

DVLA will not allow you to assign a plate to a car where the plate is age related and is newer than the car.
