Someone said on here the other day that people generally only post negative threads, so here goes for a positive one.

Got the latest issue of Car on Weds, the 50th birthday special and its a corker, one of the best mags Ive ever brought. In fact Ive gotta say that compared with most magazines, which are ste, car mags are still great. I bought my first car mag aged 9 and have never looked back... Reading through this issue I'd forgotten just how many legendary names had written for Car over the years including James May, Russell Bulgin,Mel Nichols, Steve Cropley and my favourite, LJK Setright. Wonder what he would have made of the diesel revolution!!

So, whats your favourite mag, how old were you when you bought your first car mag and who's your favourite writer?

Purchased my first copy of Autocar when I was 10. Still have a subscription now.
Though my favourite car magazine now is Motorsport. I really like the mixture of current and historic articles. Also how there is a good mixture of long reads and quick dip in and out sections. This means each issue lasts a good few weeks.

I was expecting this to be about the special car you'd bought for your 50th birthday, perhaps a mod could adjust the title to "What's your favourite car magazine?" Mine's MotorSport.

Started driving just before Hot Car became Performance Car and also just before Fast Lane started up. Bought a fair few car mags before then but driving coincided with better jobs, more disposable income and hence more magazine purchasing power. Was able to get the interesting monthlies and also Autocar and Motor (separate mags back then ) every week. Still enjoy getting them now although Fast Lane died, Autocar and Motor merged, PC died and a Phoenix called EVO arose and CAR has been through ups and downs over the years.

Looking back at the mags now, Motor seemed to be much more interesting than Autocar, they did great technical articles and comparisons.

By the way, if you don't like the"watch thing", skip the first 42 pages of that 50th birthday issue of CAR mentioned above......12 pages given over to timepieces.

Whilst at school used to get Auto Express every week ( in the days when it was more like a newspaper than a magazine). I used to fantasise about buying a car and pretty much memorised the prices and brief specs in the back. I could have told you the price of pretty much anything for sale in the late 80s/ early 90s..now I don't read It ever really. Have Evo subscription. Bought the current issue of Car and am very impressed. Obviously it is a special edition, but I do like the style. Favourite writer is a tough one. I like the Clarksons column in the Sunday Times, but then the cars are usually incidental to some rant/ lament! Maybe it's because I am fast becoming a grumpy old man too!
