Daughter is 17 soon, so thought I would commence the laughable exercise that is getting insurance quotes for teenagers.

Got a number of quotes for classic beetles, new beetles, 1 litres Seats, 1.2l Ford Ka - just a collection of small engine, low value things.

A few observations:

Insurance for a driver with a licence for 8 months or so, even as a named driver on my policy, is subtantial. If I bought and ran a 2005 1.6l Beetle, it cost £350 for me to insure it, but £3350 with daughter as a named driver.

No surprise there.

Much cheaper to insure a driver after 1 year. Some of the premiums reduced by £1000 if I quoted for daughter with licence for 1 year.

No surprise there.

It was MORE EXPENSIVE to insure for third party than fully comprehensive - with no other details changed.

How does that work? No courtesy car, repairs to the insured vehicle etc - premium went UP by £500.

In summary, she can stick with the bus until she leave school.
