How to dispose of acid chippings cheeply or neutralise it?

Your Open Question: How to neutralise or dispose of chemicals?

Thisis a acid used to strip paint off alloy wheels. When the acid looses its strength it is full of paint chipping like a sloppy porrage. (Yet to figure out how to remove the paint chippings during the process to see if the acid keeps its stripping strength for longer)
But the main question is can we neutralise it after use to dispose of cheeply or how could we dispose of cheeply. Chemical disposal companys charge over £100 per barrel and at over £300 to buy in the first place its an expensive overhead! Yet we cant find a way to strip all the paint off a alloy wheel in a 20minute time scale. Any ideas would be welcome smile thanks for reading.

If only that was a option haha
Yes you can blast a wheel to the metal, but its very rough on the alloy and leaves it pitted which will effect the paint finish.

Various media are used in blasting i thought walnut shells were more suitable for softer surfaces or a bead tank .

I'm not surprised it costs £100 to dispose of a barrel.

Hydroflouric acid is about as nasty as it gets. If I remember correctly, it displaces calcium in the bones....

Just stick it on gumtree, people take anything off there if its free.

I'm a Chemist by trade, you absolutely MUST use a specialist chemical disposal company to dispose of this substance.

What our chemist friend said.....

The very act of adding a chemical to try to neutralise the acid could create several gasses, any one of which could be fatal without a lab type environment to contain them.

I'm not one for dramatics, but seriously, leave this one to the pros.

I worked in the Nuclear Industry a few years back, Hydrofluoric Acid was one of the substances we used to extract radionuclides, so that we could measure how contaminated items were. It is the substance that I have given most respect in my entire career, and the one I was most cautious about working with. We had packs of 2.5% calcium gluconate gel immediately available available next to our work space, in case of accidental exposure, but we were cognizant of the fact that if it ever got to this stage this was very much damage limitation, at best.

If that's what it costs to dispose of safely then you need to pay up. If you don't like the overheads, find another a method of doing what you need - or find another business.

Thanks for all the comments, as i thought many of the ideas and replys is what we thought there was no harm in asking. Sadly as we are a wheel referb company there isnt a way around it as the paint must come off in order to do a proper job. Think we will look more into blasting the paint off and testing differant kinds of shot. As for the acid, looks like we shall continue to use chemical disposal companys untill we find a differant way of process. Many thanks.
