Evening all,

Still thinking about an S-type jag.

Cover around 10-20k per year depending on work.

After some thoughts, I loved the V6 2.7d S-type I borrowed and found it more than quick enough, but for only 0.3 second slower 0-60 I could have an x-type 2.2 diesel and get a possible 60mpg on a run

I guess i'm after some reasoning/sanity check as to why not to plump straight for the x-type with massive mpg, what are the other engines going to give me? apart from a bigger fuel bill for the sake of 0.3-1.1 seconds off the line?

Knocked together a table with the various engines I was comparing...

Thanks!

The mpg for the 2.5 V6 is very optimistic. Mid 20's if a manual & less if an automatic. The V6 X-type will make sure you're looking for a petrol station within 200 miles of you filling up. By 250 miles you're starting to panic & by 300 you'll be wondering how heavy a car can be! I've not had any experience of the S-type, but I can't imagine it being much different.

When I was doing 30k a year, I wanted (a) the comfiest place to sit, and (b) the less spent (time & money) filling up the better. I sold a 325d and bought a 330 convertible but that's because I'm stupidlaugh

Actual fuel economy figures on the S-Type diesel are nowhere near the official. Mine was pre-DPF, apparently later cars are 10% more efficient, but with the cruise at 70 it would get 38mpg. Average over 50k miles was 30mpg odd - worked out from the pumps, not the computer. It's also massively complicated with several extremely expensive weakspots, underbonnet access is poor so every job takes forever and costs a fortune, and they have a habit of destroying their torque converters and gearboxes. Not a journey went by when I didn't wish I'd bought the V6 petrol or, better still, the V8. I only get 3mpg worse on average from my automatic Volvo V70 T5, so once you add in the cost of petrol vs diesel it costs sod all extra.

Try and find a diesel S Type for sale with high mileage. You won't find many, unless they're in a breakers yard.

Dave

ETA - it was very smooth though. That 2.2 in the X-Type is as rough as a badgers arse. For 10-20k a year I'd get a V8 S-type and enjoy it, the fuel economy won't be that much worse than the diesel.

I am currently running an X-type 2.5 sport manual, and get 25-32 on a motorway run of about 450 miles, averaging 200 miles in 3 hours, comfortable, quiet, good sound system, what is there not to like. My only quibble is the slow wiper speeds in heavy rain.

My 3.0 X-type does 20mpg around town (I do short annoying trips) and happily gives mid 30s on a run and under Miss Daisy conditions will hit 40mpg. Touring range is 450 miles easily.

Personal choice from your list would be a facelift S-type 3.0. Peach of an engine but no chocolate AWD system. The auto box is also good unlike the X-type. Lots of car for the money and a very comfy place to be smile

Not a V6. The only engine to have on an S-Type is a supercharged V8. As for fuel costs there are a few about with LPG conversions,

I like and I'm a fan of both the X and S Types.

The 2.2d isn't as frugal as the earlier 2.0d X-Type and while it should be good on a run, I'd have thought 60mpg is being slightly optimistic.

For me though, it's the fact the X-Type loses it's AWD with the diesel engine. FWD really just doesn't cut it for me. On this basis I just couldn't do it. If I had an X-Type it'd be a 3.0 V6 no exceptions.

With the S-Type I actually quite like it's quirky looks, although it has to be in the right colour. It is a chunky car though and weighs more than an AWD X-Type! While offering only marginally more room.

The 2.7 manual would be my pick if you are going for a diesel. A remap would transform it's performance too. I'm also quite fond of the V6 S-Type, but only with a manual. It's actually quite spirited to drive and is the lightest best handling S-Type you can get.

Thanks i'd be stretching the fuel budget as it is on official figures so if its worse than that, lord help me LOL

that certainly doesn't sound like a good ownership experience :- O

Been looking a lot online and the 2004 onwards S-types seem to get good reviews all round, especially as the ford parts make it cheaper to fix?

thanks, I am swinging towards the S-type more, prefer the styling just need to cost up the petrol vs diesel.

Not even found a V8 example in my £3500-£5500 budget, need to set autotrader to national search to get an idea i think.

Is the Stype rear wheel drive?

I would love a manual but it seems they are ten a penny compared to the auto's for sale, and many fetching a budget busting premium.

My wife drives a late S type 4.2 V8.

It averages 26mpg over the average week (25 mile daily commute, taking daughter to nursery / grandparents, shopping and so on)
On a 350 mile trip to Dorsetshire last year, fully laden and cruise set to 70, it averaged 34mpg door to door.

Very impressive car, cheaper to buy than a comparible diesel version, and way more reliable.

Those MPG figures for the 2.5V6 look very ermm...creative.

I get about 25mpg on my commute. (~7 Miles of dual carriageway + 3 miles of stop-start town driving) I get about 37ish on a long run at 70mph. These figures are for a manual.

The 2.5V6 is a good engine, packaging makes it a pain to work on...but if I was buying again, I think I would try and find a 3.0.

2.2 diesel and map it. ~180bhp. Enough poke for everyday driving and good economy.

I have a petrol 3.0 litre S type and it's been a magnificent car. Had it 5 years and since "new" it's averaged 24mpg according to the computer. Reset the second trip last month when I towed a caravan around Wales and it averaged 25mpg towing. So far at 70k miles and nothing major gone wrong, in fact nothing at all has needed fixing apart from a tiny hose that goes from one bank of cylinders to the other and cost £5 to fix.

My colleagues recently swapped to an 06 2.7 s type, before that was an o5 s80 diesel, before that an 03 e39 525td and before that an 03 saab 9-5 3.0v6 diesel all in the last 3 years,i buy cars vicariously through him!
He says the jags the quickest and most comfy but least economical averaging circa 30mpg,hes 68 drives sensibly and its a steady 30-50 a road commute.
Id track down an lpg s type or xj, the x type is ok in my book but the 4pot derv engine sounds just like the fwd transit campers we sell at work, suspect its a very close relation.

I ran a 3.0 SE Manual X-Type for 5 years and 60k miles. The best average I ever got was 33mpg. I would be interested to see how you achieved 40 mpg unless it was a very short run downhill!!!

I really enjoyed owning the X-Type though! Amazing value for money party

OP: Note that the MANUAL 3.0 X-Type does 0-60 in 6.58 secs. The auto is slower.

I did say Miss Daisy didn't I...

About a year ago from Bristol to The Lizard in Cornwall, 200ish miles door to door. Okay so down hill jokes aside it was a ruddy awful rainy and at times foggy trip. I was in no hurry so pottered at an indicated 60 (56 real) only going faster when momentum allowed downhill before an up. With a lot of forward observation it made for a challenge.

Plenty of people steamed by on the A30 in the fog when I was down to 45. I gently steered my way around the wreckage of one such group who had managed a pile up...

On a considerably more spirited midnight run back a couple of days later I brought the round trip average down to 32 smile

I'm quite gentle on journeys so mid to high 30s is quite common for me. Not slow, just appropriate progress and never in a hurry these days smile
