Chaps, I thought I'd share this clip I found on youtube.

Remember the days before heath and safety ? this short film has the lot, no miles of cones, no shutting motorways for several days to recover a car, smiling coppers with hacksaws etc etc.

Given how things are now, this forum seemed a good place to share this ;

Enjoyable.

I also think I recognize the "WPC" that appears in the penultimate section.

Looks pretty much exactly as it is today. 'A' roads, yep, turn up and load the car up.

M/ways. Yep. Turn up and load the car up. Blocking a lane? Yep. Cone that lane off, recover and open up.

Do you have figures of how many cars are recovered off the motorway and how many times a m/way is 'closed for several days'. I ask that becuase I recover dozens of cars for all sorts of reasons , but it's very rare that even one lane is closed to do it.

But still. It was worth it to see the nice lady near the end.

Does it still work like that? I distincly remember my junction on the M1 being completely closed during rush hour. A motorbike had rear ended a Pug 206, it genuinely wouldn't have taken 2mins to move the car out of the way.

Or is this because of a possible death?

A fatality is a different case. The hundreds of minor RTCs are just moved and recovered.

There wasn't a death. I mean, do they leave things in situ for investigation incase the motorbike rider later died in hospital?

Other than that, I have absolutely no idea why they would leave the car in situ and cone off the sliproad whilst standing around itching their bks.

Makes me feel old looking at that footage.

Still, looking at the average cars on the road at time of the 1986/7 clips, no wonder the Suds I was driving at the time seemed so revolutionary.
