Audi B5 S4 biturbo? None of the RS trim so pretty much a sleeper, especially if you can get an Avant. Lot of potential for extra power (and bills if the turbos pack up).

Passat W8 manual with a chip

looks like a normal passat but will pump out over 300bhp, apparently good for over 180mph- trouble is finding one as only about 70 in the country.

Maybe a peugeot 406 coupe(same engine as the 3.0 clio), do away with the aircon and put in a turbo- thats good for over 500bhp but 350-400 would be far more usable. Can pick one up for about a grand which leaves 3k for mods

I've done this a few times for £4k, though the trouble is the "sleeper" part. A debadged E36 M3 Evo is reasonably subtle, but then I appreciate a lot of people feel the E36 has fallen into the somewhat socially undesirable category (not me, I've had two recently) and they don't really keep up with an Evo down a country road. A Pulsar GTI-R is another option for £4k, but the looks are horrendous. An RX-7 at £4k is a definite Evo beater, but again not subtle. The other car I've had that could worry an Evo (in a straight line at least), but didn't look as though it would was my mk2 Golf with BAM engine conversion. That gave it 280 BHP with about 1100 kg to carry. Granted, I doubt you could build one with decent suspension and brakes for £4k, but you could buy one someone else has built.

what about a saab 9-3 hot aero with a few select mods you can get them upto 400hp from what ive read, there are some crazy sweds out there lol

Don't bother. I had one. Most mildly warm hatches are faster. Plus they are very unreliable and uber expensive when they fail.

If I wanted to keep up with an Evo I would spend a tiny fraction of the £4k paying for a passenger ride in the Evo.

Then I'd spend the rest of the £4k on something that's probably not as fast as an Evo but that makes me happy. Like a ZX7R and a turbo MX5 (with spare change for a season of competitive drifting).

You could probably pick up one with a pair of k04cs on it already for 4k, they eat evos alive

Mr2 turbo with some mods will keep with an EVO at that budget, in a straight line.

Buy an EVO 3 and then put the bonnet and spoilers from a Proton Wira on (same car and should be a direct fit)
