That was utterly fantastic! Those few laps were so much more thrilling than a whole season of modern F1.

Mind you, £60k spent on an Escort in 1985 was a vast sum of money!!

I know, it's like arcade car racing. Keep the foot slammed and hope you stay on the tarmac!

I don't think John Welch's car is really an Escort - 4wd and probably 300bhp+ turbo engine.
I spent most of my teens watching rallycross, Martin Schanche (sp?), Will Gollop, John Welch plus many many more driving Metros, Astras, Escorts and RS200s!
Awesome video, brought back great memories.

What a brilliant overtake, look at the flames coming out of the exhaust after he finishes the move, it's like the car is laughing at the cars behind it!

Awesome! Those boys don't give a crap about contact do they!

Great overtake, if in doubt...

Did I hear that correctly- 800bhp Porsche Vs. a 200bhp 'scort?
That's what I was thinking?? 750bhp Pork and I'm pretty sure 6R4s made 500+, I just presumed the year and 300 ish bhp.

This is what modern motorsport needs to recapture. Im bored of F1 and its unobtainability, im bored of rallying with 2 different manufacturers and the same for touring cars. I want to own these cars little brothers even if theyre from the 80's. I wish motorsport was willing to play that now.

Wanted to know more about one of the cars.
DO NOT GOOGLE ESCORT STD CAR.

The escorts are gartrac widebody versions - think they ran x-trac 4wd systems and I think most ran zakspeed 1.9 litre turbos with circa 460bhp running with high boost - quite a machine!

Theres quite a few conversions knocking about around here, mk3 & 4. rwd is more fun than 4x4 with the short wheelbase though smile

Find your nearest banger/grass track racing if contact's your thing. Otherwise the national tracks host races most weekends. I went to the Britcar weekend at Donnington in April which offered a host of different races - the minis were great! And I'll be at the BTCC race weekend at Brands next month with 9 races on the Sunday. The Ginettas and Clios are always good value!

There's exciting, amateur racing out there if you want to see it, you just have to dig a little.

I went to a recent Rallycross event at Lydden hill in Kent. It was a good day out, but I couldn't help but feel that the use of these joker laps and split portions of the track are a gimmick for an ADD audience. Give me fire-breathing underdog battles anyday!

I remember buying the Matchbox 205 T16 in the Brands Hatch model shop. Also remember a rallycross I went to as a kid that was so foggy you couldn't see the bottom of Paddock Hill from the grandstand!! Good times...

Chavy banger racing for rich chavs with chav cars with stupid chav wings and bodykits! Why would I want to watch a chav escort racing how boring! It wasn't like this back in the good old days!

Oh wait, this isn't a BTCC/WRC thread.

Fantastic. I always loved my school mates one of those.

I also have fond childhood memories of Brands. Last year I took my little girl there and popped in the model shop.
