why would anyone collect buy any BL cars they where all s

This

My Dad used to purchase 1 year old cars and run them for a year before punting them on.
Then he purchased a 1989 maestro and became poor... That was the family car for 100k miles and the whole of my
schooldays (at a private school - the Maestro wasn't replaced for a reason).
There are happy and sad memories in seeing that dashboard.

It is a collectors car for anyone who collects BL cars. If it was a VW Caddy of the same vintage and in the same condition people would be pulling their belly sticks off and offering stupid money for it. I just cant understand the hatred for most British made cars, its a big reason we have no car industry left.

I learned to drive in a Maestro and have never understoof the dislike for them. It was a far, far better car than period Escorts, etc.
It did 10 years and 100k with my mum driving (not good with the gears) before the clutch went at 120k for my parents - a good car. Rusty arches for most of that time though (but never fixed, they just went more rusty!)

Yes, I thought they were pretty good too. Pretty refined, spacious interior, huge glass area for a really airy feel, good handling and the fast ones were indeed really fast. I always liked the Montego more than the Sierra and Cavalier as well - so did many contemporary tests. I parents had a 1.6 petrol maestro back in the 80's which I occasionally used, I must say I was quite impressed with the old girl.
It seemed quicker than my 1.6 escort and was more economical, and you could buy a talking one lol.
A friend of mine had a diesel montego which was about a 20 owner car and on 300,000 miles when he had it, so I guess the diesels couldn't have been too bad.
I think rust was the killer with the maestro but then again it was no worse than a vauxhall or a ford from the same period for rust issues.
