Weight, affect performance?

I was having a think, so got the scales out and weighed how my gear weights for work, 20kg is what it came out as.

Now will this affect performance, not worried about MPG, more performance.

Fractional differences in acceleration and braking, you won't notice it at all in all probability.


ETA - given an average power car. Certainly all of my bikes would notice an extra 20 kg...

You will run much slower with 20kg on your back, although I don't know where miles per gallon comes in.

(if you're talking about adding 20kg to a car or motorbike, you need to say what kind)

Don't they say that weight is the one thing that affects all aspects of a car's/bike's performance? Less of it is always good.

Every kilo has to be accelerated, braked, and turned.

Looking at acceleration only, on a 1000kg car with 200hp, (200bhp/tonne) a reduction of 20kgs puts the ratio at 204.1bhp/tonne.

In my boot in the car. 20KG on my back would kill me no question I am not fit, well fit'ish.

20kg on a motorbike would most likely tell the diffrence in handling, like running a full tank, yes I ride.

20KG on your back on a bike is great for easy wheelies. It'll pull your arms off over 100mph though. Probably.

As Colin Chapman said - Adding power makes you faster on the straights. Subtracting weight makes you faster everywhere.

I caught myself cutting all the extra bits off all the bolts on the lotus once. A mornings work and I saved about 500g.


Then I caught myself in the mirror and realised I could easily drop 3 stone, and still look fat.

Exactly this. I felt like this when I first looked at getting an Elise. I figured I'd be better in a car which wasn't so focussed on being lightweight, since I am a porker.
