BMW model numbers

Can someone explain what each model the BMW's are?
I can manage ther various series 1,3,5,7 etc but am completed flummoxed by the E39 E46 etc.
Does it refer to engine size, model year or what

John Burns is your friend. He's been a good source to me over the years and clearly has far too much time on his hands.
This link has all model codes - each model code is specific to the shape and not the engine size.
The link also shows the engine codes too and which model they were fitted to.
It's been a while since I've looked it up but I also kept it in my favourites.

Yup. Mercedes for one. Audi for two.
