Long term barge question

If I wanted to get a barge, to keep a while, and do a long commute in, what should I get?
I was thinking something like an XJR or S-Type?
Basically I'll have around £10K-£12K upfront, but would also be able to put say £5K into it to replace fragile parts. I don't mind spending money on something that will last.
So if I have the money to buy the car, and then replace a load of stuff to make it (hopefully) reliable, what should I go for, Merc, BMW, Jag? I would say Lexus but I want something with character.

Jags have oodles of character and an XJR is in budget.

I would go for a 7 series, but then i use one as a daily.
By far the most comfortable car i have ever owned- refined, full of kit, and handles suprisingly well if you need it to (given the limitation of size/weight before the masses attack to tell me its no Caterham).
No idea on UK prices, but that should of cash would get you a great car.

Entirely the wrong badge for the car, but it's a massive amount of technology and metal for the money.

I'd go with whichever you like best - personally, I'd go with Audi or BMW, but that's only because I've never really got on with Jaguars. Alternatively, a Range Rover would be a very acceptable mode of transport, but thirsty, so perhaps not best suited to a long commute. I was thinking something like an XJR or S-Type?

This may sound a bit chav, but does anyone make an after-market exhaust for the S-Type R or the XJR? I've heard 5-series with the Dnian exhaust and they sound great. Does the Jag have anything good available that lets it breath a little easier (and slightly louder)?
You're spoilt for choice at the moment, since no one seems to want barges with petrol engines. I'm a bit of a BMW guy, but quite fond of Jags too. Obviously an S Class, an A8 and a Phaeton are possible too.
How are the prices of the Maserati Quattroporte looking these days? Too brave?
