Fun & Reliable car for £2k?

Afternoon all,

I've just started on a secondment, meaning I can no longer walk to work. So, to avoid the hassle of buses etc. I'm thinking about buying a second car. Looking for something fun and fairly reliable. Work are paying 40p per mile for my travel, so I'm not too concerned about petrol costs. It's only a short journey, so I won't be putting loads of miles on the clock.

So far I've been considering a Lexus LS400 or a BMW 328. Thoughts on these? Any other suggestions? Could probably spend £3k, but I'd rather keep it around £2k.

Ideally I'd like to be able to chuck the golf clubs in the boot.

Impreza Wagon?

Plenty of room for golf clubs and the like and with a bit of caution 2-3k should get you a tidy one.

Dunno if the Lexus would count as fun but certainly a lovely comfy luxo barge, dunno about 328s as never been a fan of ickle BMWs, how about a nice E39 Sport 5 series or my choice would be a well kept and timing gear changed XJ8,ideal for the Golf club!

2k for the red SC 6 pot, 3k for the SC V8 and a bit more for the TWR.
seen the TWR in red, link below, for 3k and worth a punt. Get respect at the golf club and wouldnt lose a bean on it

You said fun, so I would get over Imprezas, 3series and even bigger barges.
An MR2 (turbo or N/A) would be great choice IMO.

Maybe a 2-seater soft top. Be good if it had Japanese reliability and was RWD. Such a shame something doesn't fit well under your budget.

Clio 172/182 ? might need to put the clubs across the back seats or poke it through the 60/40 but for the money these cars are amazing and regularly see 40mpg so i am told by a friend who has one

Clubs fit completely in the boot of a 172 (just take the driver/3 wood out and lay it on top)

I'd get a Jag though. Golf club perfection.

I would even have a go in a 318is. I had one and its a great little car. Not fast but a lovely steer.

I'm not a golfist, but MX5s have tiny boots and I don't think a full set of golf stuff would fit in there.

Certainly my fencing stuff had to live on the passenger seat, and my archery stuff only just fits.

Quite a bit of choice, lots of bargy options from BMW's to Jags to Lexus'.

More sporty numbers such as MGF's, del sol Honda's, MX-5's or maybe more of a coupe with a Prelude, Puma or a ST185 Celica Turbo.

To save you the bother of checking, I've had two. Neither was particularly reliable, and 40 MPG ain't happening unless you're driving it like your granny, in which case, what's the point?

TBH go Japanese for reliability at this price point, but then you've got rust issues to deal with (then again you'll get this with a BMW as well).

A golf bag will fit in the cabin.
