0340 fault code BMW 323ci

Morning all

I have a year 2000 E46 323ci it has been running very rough and brings up 0340 fault code which relates to the intake camshaft position sensor. I replaced it with a Eurocarparts sensor and the fault was still present so I used a BMW part and it is still the same. Is it possible that it is the exhaust camshaft sensor causing this or any thing else?
