Sorry for posting such a boring topic, but I'm currently on the lookout for a new car, and quite fancy an estate for general practicality and lugging the dog around. Heres the criteria.

- No more than 8k
- Something that is reasonably interesting/a bit different
- Something around 2006 or younger
- Reliable
- Less than 70k on the clock.
- Do around 12k a year, so fuel economy not terribly important, but wouldn't mind trying a diesel for the first time.

At the moment, all I can think of is a 159 sportwagon, but having difficulties finding a nice one for the money.

Any thoughts?

I've got a Saab 9-3 sport wagon 1.9 td which I like a lot. As a result of Saab folding the prices have dropped a lot, so high spec low milage ones are easy to find!

Probably doesn't meet the interesting or a bit different criteria but a Saab 9-3 estate will be under budget. Something like this perhaps.....

I had your same criteria about a year ago.

the cars I test drove were:

Citroen c6 (yes no estate, but a huge boot nonetheless, and more than made up for it in other areas)
BMW 5 series (e90?)
Audi a6 allroad
Merc E class

The germans did nothing for me, yes they were all good, but uninspiring and bland. I came so close to the c6, but ended up with a 159 sportwagonsmile

I'm in a similar position to the op but would prefer auto. What are the Saab autos like? I'm more bothered by reliability than actual ability.

"fuel economy not terribly important, but wouldn't mind trying a diesel for the first time."

This will make it hard to offer anything, 15mpg or 30mpg is a big jump.

£4k-£5k will get you a very nice Subaru Legacy Spec B of that age (yes, I'm biased). If you can live with the fuel consumption (I chose it as I too do low miles), it really is amazing value for money. Had a 159 Sportwagon 1.9 diesel and loved it - but they're still surprisingly pricey for used Alfas and not a patch on the Subaru when it comes to handling/pace/noise.

Closer to the 30mpg (or above) rather than 15mpg please!

Octavia VRS estate. There's a lovely blue one on autotrader for 7500. Seems to have all the right options though autotrader makes no mention of cruise control but the dealers website says it does have it.
