Budget 4x4

Normally on 4x4 threads I'd recommend a landcruiser. Only 4x4 I'd rely on!

A mate however isn't a bit fan, but is after a 4x4 and wants to spend between £4k and £5k on something reliable and cheap to run.

Will be used for daily driver duties, carry the dogs and general crap and going on shoots.

Recommendations?

We get the odd ssangyong rexton in swap at work,for some reason i quite like em,they're tough n cheap as chips too.

Honda cr-v 2002-2006 model. Get the diesel if you can - very reliable cars. Not a proper 4x4 though but it does have selective 4 wheel drive.

That budget will get a tidy terrano. Not everyone's taste I agree. Mine has been brilliant, pulls our caravan, plays in mud, has a huge boot and 7 seats. Does about 27 mpg average and overall its been very good.

Now don't laugh.. but I ran a Ford Expedition North Face Edition to cart dogs and kids around from London up to Yorkshire back in 2004. I was roundly hated by the Green Meanies, but it was as cheap as chips, never let me down, more macho than any of the other Japanese and American stuff.... it went on camping trips, to France a few times to cart cases and cases of wine and could easily sit 7 people in...

Not an obvious choice, but one I don't regret. In hindsight, I should have bought a Defender, but thought the Expedition was a touch more comfortable than the Landie for long trips.

Truly horrible to be in though, agriculural loud unrefined engine, crap auto box,will spin wheels on any even slightly slippery surface unless in permanent 4wd and handles corners like a ferry, awful soft suspension which doesn't even soak up any bumps either.

My money would be on a Subaru Forester all day long.

I just sold a 97 petrol terranno, had it for 13 years great car, used to tow the track cars, and family trips only sold because the wife wanted an Auto so she could use the family 4X4 never got 27mpg always 24.

I've just bought a mint Mitsubishi L200 twin cab with an aero back for less than the lower end of that budget & it's mint!

Drive sedately & you get early 30s mpg.

Masses of space in the back & easily seats 4; proper 4WD system with Hi/Lo ratios too.

Frontera, cheap to run and insure, pretty reliable as long as they are serviced and have a decent a four wheel drive system. Stick a set of MT's on and its a great plugger too!

For that budget you can even get a fully loaded model with all the bells and whistles...

Shogun/Pajero?

Dirt cheap, well spec'd, tough as old boots and pretty much disposable.

I have a 3.5 litre LWB Paj and it's quite nippy too.

How much off roady and how much soft roady?


£4k will get you a really tidy Discovery or Range Rover or an ok Ninety/Defender.

All are cheap and easy to run and maintain and residuals on Defenders make them cheap total cost of ownership vehicles.

Jimny's are pretty cool and highly capable, but a lot smaller and I'm not sure I'd want to spend £4k on one.


Jeep Wranglers hold their money rather well too, very similar to a Defender in ability, but more focused as a recreational vehicle over being a workhorse.

Ford Bronco, often get 1 a month or so on eBay. 5.0 V8 and better performance and mpg than a V8 Range Rover. Robust and reliable and rock solid residuals.

looks good For the money. I had mine 4 years now. It's a 2000 X manual 2.7 td lwb se spec. I paid 3 grand for it and its still alive and well. No mot fails, break downs or nasty bills. Just tyres and air con re gas. It is bumpy and agriculture like but for the money great.
