One Car to Keep Forever

What sports car would you buy now with the intention of keeping for the rest of your driving life?

It doesn't have to be an all rounder, a weekend / summer car is fine but should be something realistic for you to afford, even if that means affordable finance.

I keep having dirty thoughts of a Caterham Supersport. Great fun, cheap to run and perfect for my local roads in South / Mid Wales. 140 bhp is more than enought to use on the road and to be able to use most of the performance without getting up into stupid figures.

Elise S1 And not drive it tooo much.
Just like e-type, this s1 will be a classic in 20 years. Already stable prices.

For me it would have to be an aircooled 911, probably a 964. As much as I like the idea of building a Caterham to keep, I just don't think I'd use it enough.

In fact I bought one with the intention of keeping it forever. Then a baby was on the way and I realised that I needed two more doors and a little extra room couldn't hurt.

It is very likely that I will buy a 4-door version of the E92 M3 in a couple of years.

If its going to be forever,presumably I'll still be trying to drive it when I'm in my 80's and even 90's. Think I'll give Caterhams and Elise's a miss . Do Merc SL's count as sports cars?

You have to envisage getting into and out of the car when 80. That may rule out an Elise or Caterham. I bought my 1972 Europa Special from a bloke who had owned it since 1974, buy sold it because he was tool old to get into it anymore.

For me it would be a Noble M12 GTO 3R. It has the right mix of poise, balance, power, useability and emotion. It is fast enough to never leave you wanting in the real world (whatever that is) and to that end is probably future proof. Could well be among the last of the non-goverened-by-electronic sports cars we'll see.

I think they look bloody fantastic although my opinion isn't shared universally.

I want a 928, having said that, as the Boxster stands me pretty much nothing, is low miles and in good shape, I have pretty much no intention of selling it any time soon.

Surely the only answer is a Morgan. When you order a Morgan and they start building they put a small plaque with your name on, on the vehicle (or they used too).

So you'd have it built for you with your name on. Such a vehicle you'd never sell.

SLs are true class for sure. I'll stick with the Elise and get Stannah to make me a winch for later years....
I still see Surtees and Moss hooning around though. True inspiration
