Head unit recomendation with specific request...
Discussion
Hi,
After a recommendation on a head unit but have some specific requirements which are hard to research without actually getting my hands on one, so if anyone has or knows of a head unit with this feature, let me know!
Basically, I want it to be able to play the Iphone4 line out via a USB input.
Now, I know there are loads of head units out there that can control an Ipod or Iphone from the files stored on the phone but I dont have any, I use Spotify to play music. All Spotify does is play the music out fia the Line Out built into the charger port, much like if you were streaming radio.
So are there any head units out there that will just play the line out from the phone via a USB port, much like I guess a dock would. I dont want or need Iphone control via the head unit as it wouldnt work for me.
Budget would be under £100. No need for a CD drive, just the Iphone support in the way I need it.
Any recomendations?

If I'm understanding this correctly, you want to be able to use an app to control the music rather than having the head unit take control?
I have this on a headunit I picked up from Halfords a couple of weeks ago. It was a button on it, that if you hold it down, gives control from the phone rather than the headunit
Would that work?

yeah I guess so. My point is that I dont have hundreds of MP3s stored on the phone for the head unit to access and play, the phone will only be "streaming" music to the head unit, so yes, the app will be in control, not the head unit.
The head unit just needs to listen to what the phone is outputting via the Line Out and play it back to me.
I know i could do this via a line in from the headphone socket but I also want to be able to charge the phone at the same time via the head unit. Plus the Line Out would produce a better quality sound.

I think it'll do it. I've just been out to the car and had a go, I dont have Spotify but it just played something else from an app fine.
It's a Kenwood 4054U, maybe take your phone to Halfords and give it a go. The USB is on the front, just whack a dock connector lead in and away you go. It charges the phone as well, and I think was about £60

At the moment halfords are doing a nice Sony head unit that's meant to be half price which is iPhone compatible for £99.
If I Remember it glows blue when turned on
There is also another Sony head unit which looks identical which glows orange for the same price but don't make the same mistake as me and buy that one as it isnt iPod compatible.
It's not to much of a problem as you can always buy a cheap memory stick for a tenner and plug that in to the USB, also it saves leaving a fancy phone pluged into the stereo.
Well that's what I tell myself now that I bought the wrong stereo lol.

My friend has an a3 which streams Spotify via Bluetooth. It's an Audi system, not sure if any aftermarket units do the same thing...
This is what I do - AFAIK, any car with A2DP will do this, but not some older cars which have RSAP rather than headset and A2DP profile Bluetooth.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
