Car parking, need reg plate !
Discussion
My wife just went to Stockport and parked, she had to provide her registration number to get a ticket, that is the first and last time we do that, we pay for a ticket and if we choose to give it someone else then that is our choice, we have paid for the right to park there for the time on the ticket, we also do not want to provide our registration so companies can then use the info.
The high street is struggling and then they do this, it is their prerogative to introduce these terms, it is also our prerogative to never go there again and order stuff off the internet.
I always donate my ticket if there is time left on it, don't see the problem myself, if I pay a pound to rent seventy square feet of tarmac for an hour, it isn't bad money for the owner of the land, but no, they want £2 or £3 every hour.

Quite common with the council car parks around here now!. We have a customer in Loughborough and whenever we go on-site to them the nearest car park is a council one - Have to put reg plate in on the (Rather old) machine, But it doesn't accept 'new' style plates. Never had the warden realise my ticket just has gibberish on it.
It is bloody annoying though, Especially when most of your driving is in hire cars and you don't know the reg plate!.

Anyone remeber the good old days of parking meters when you paid sixpence for an hour? In those days if you left before the time was up the next person to park in the space got the benefit of the time left on the meter and if they put in another sixpence the time was added to the balance on the meter. Happy days!
I always press one letter/number repeatedly until the machine sounds unhappy then ask for a ticket. Never had a problem getting a ticket or a problem from the parking warden and I have been doing this for years.
As people have said its very fustrating if your not in a car you know. And I dont see why its relevent.
I would also like to see them prove that there was not an issue with the machine should they take issue with you, after all you have paid and got a recipt.

I agree. Everyone's a bloody opportunist thief these days. Not content with taking the money from you for the time allocated, they want the next poor sap to pay too when the space is already "rented".
It is sadly too common to exploit the motorist these days.
Yeah. It is sadly too common to exploit the motorist these days.
Although if someone rents out a space and choses not to use if for the entire period and instead then sublets it for free to someone else who would otherwise be paying for a new ticket who is it who is the thief? I don't think it's the person who has clearly published the rules for parking on their land, I suspect it's the motorist getting free parking.

But why isn't it transferable? The owner has his rent. Why should he have more because of a car swapover?Although if someone rents out a space and choses not to use if for the entire period and instead then sublets it for free to someone else who would otherwise be paying for a new ticket who is it who is the thief? I suspect it is just to stop folk transferring tickets (or sticking them to the machines for the next person to possibly use, as happens around here).
But a lot of barrier-controlled car parks (here in Glasgow anyways) no longer need the plate to be manually fed in, they're read by a camera as you enter anyway.
All a bit snoopy for my liking, but I have to admit, it has saved me the full day fee at least twice when I've lost my ticket and they've been able to issue a replacement based on exactly what time I entered according to the cameras...

Alas, the owners of the car park can really make up whatever rules they like. Its their car park and you choose to use it. I would imagine that they could charge extra for red cars if they wanted too. Watchman said:

Because the man who owns the ground you want to use made his rules to suit him and not everyone else.Sort of like how I'm not allowed make copies of DVDs and give them to people I think might enjoy them. Why should I undermine someone else's business? Seems unfair.
Although for the record I always give my tickets away, because I enjoy being nice to someone face to face enough to make systematically defrauding a faceless company seem like it doesn't really matter.
I got p*ssed off with the multi-storey car park in Letchworth. There's no barriers on the way in but it has effectively an ANPR camera which records when you go in.
Then, cue mass confusion as the population of idiots who either -
- Can't operate a touch-screen interface
- Can't remember their own bloody numberplate
So you have to queue up for a while and the last time I went there it wouldn't accept the pound coin I had! I just left without paying. Haven't heard anything, but I'm still happy to pay the £1.10 I owe them if they want it.

The profit of the business is based on people not transferring the tickets. Say an hour is a £1 ticket. And say the car park is open 10hrs/day, always full and users only stay for 30mins on average. It could generate £20 per space per day by being full, if everyone left after 30mins and another paying user took the space.
But it would only generate £10 per space per day by being full, if people passed their unused time on to other people.
The drop in revenue would mean that prices would need to be put up to compensate, so charging £2 per hour to restore the £20 per space per day income.
You may well argue that "I've paid to rent that space for x time and I should do as I wish with it". But the reality is that the margins on renting the land and operating the car park will be based on people NOT transferring the tickets. In theory you could cut their revenue by using up your whole allocation of time, but the reality is that this doesn't happen. And so the parking rates are based on the real world number of cars/users and not your theoretical minimum if we all used our full hour.
So I really do believe that parking prices would be put up if everyone shared the remaining time on their tickets.

What info is that? The registration? Derrr, it's right there on your car. You know, the one you drive around in and park at places. People can actually walk by and read the registration; imagine that! Next time you go shopping, don't forget the tin foil....The local Sainsburys tried this system once, it completely failed from memory. Not only did it not accept anything that wasn't in the A123ABC or AA01AAA formats, there were enormous queues for the meters as nobody seemed to be able to remember their numberplate. Most people ended up parking on the nearby streets, which pretty much turned to gridlock when the school(s) on that road were kicking out.
