It's been in a river for at least the last 5 years and every time I go it's got a little smaller:

Agree - Mk3 or Mk4, I'd suggest, by looking at the wheels.

Not a Ford Escort, the wheel has bolts not nuts - I'd guess at a Peugeot or Citroen of some sort

Those wheels have something of a G60 steelies, I am going to go with a late 80's/early 90's VW.
